598498 2007-10-06 02:37:00 My computer is as follow
Intel D915GAG Motherboard
Pentium 4 3.0ghz CPU
2x 256mb ram in dual and 1x 512mb DDR400
Nvidia 6600 PCIE (Standard not GT)

It was going fine until a few nights ago when it crashed and turned itself off, on booting it back up again it said this was due to overheating on the CPU, I continued using it for a few minutes when it did it again. So I dusted and vacuumed it out, turned it back on, 'no video signal' blared across my monitor. I eventually took off the heat sink and fan over the cpu and got the additional dust, I also reset my bios by taking out my CMOS battery for a few minutes.

This got it running again, and haven't overheated since. However now when I try to play GTA: Vice City (the only game I've been playing of late) it lags terribly after driving for about a minute, my FPS has been extremely low. I updated my graphics driver and updated my bios and have made sure the settings there are correct.

I want to boot Linux on an external hard drive, however whenever I have my drive on while I turn on my computer it freezes, even if I turn it on during the windows logo, it works perfectly once an OS is loaded however. I've made sure USB Boot is turned on but to no avail.

Thanks.

598499 2007-10-06 02:46:00 When you removed the heat sink and CPU fan when replacing did you put in fresh heatsink paste ?

If you didn't the seal between the CPU and heatsink may not be working correctly - still overheating, especially when additional stress (heat build up) is put on the CPU when playing your game. - hence the lagging.

Just a point of interest - not a good idea to go digging around the inside of a PC with a household Vacuume cleaner - all sorts of static damage can be caused.

598500 2007-10-06 03:01:00 No I didn't, it's been removed before by myself and techies for various reasons without any new paste being placed to my knowledge. Warhog (7975)

Try purchasing some thermal paste and put some on, any tech should know that when you remove the heatsink - replace the seal (thermal paste) especially if its been off before.

The thermal paste forms a seal between the CPU and the heatsink.

When running doing day to day stuff it will heat up usually not enough maybe to notice, but when your game is played it sounds like its overheating again.
{quote} it lags terribly after driving for about a minute{end}

This may not be the complete cause, but it certainly wont be helping.

598503 2007-10-06 06:34:00 Oh, I reinstalled my heat sink and fan, made sure the glue was sticking, seems to be running fine now.

The hard drive doesn't freeze if I set high speed USB to disabled - but I'd rather have 450mb connection than 12.
