| 599284 | 2007-10-08 05:20:00 | Hi! Ok this problem has been annoying me for a while now, I've tried fixing it but to no avail so here I am. I set up one of the computers inside my home network with a static ip address (192.168.1.100) and Remote Desktop on port '1987'. And forwarded port '1987' and '3389' in my router from Any external IP address to the internal ip address '192.168.1.100'. See picture. aycu15.webshots.com (allyoucanupload.webshots.com) Now, when I remote desktop to this computer (MainPC) from inside my network, using my laptop (192.168.1.100:1987), it all works fine. But when I try it from elsewhere it will not let me connect. Doesn't even get to the windows log in screen but gives me an error. Hope someone can help! Thank you Gregor |

| 599287 | 2007-10-08 06:20:00 | Got Win XP Pro on both computers. I figure firewalls are not a problem since I can remote desktop to that computer from inside my LAN. It must be some setting on my router (RTA1320) thats blocking it. Since I cannot get anyone to ping my external ip address either. |

The LAN will work because its on the 192.168.1???? all the same from your router. without the IP address you have for the internet, the remotes not looking in the right place. Note: Trying to locate a easy to follow example of how to set it up - unless someone else has instructions handy:help: I personally use team viewer as its easy to setup and works great from any where in the world. Even helped some friends in the USA few months back. |

| 599289 | 2007-10-08 07:01:00 | I figured that NAT would automatically turn my ISP provided IP address into 192.168.1.???. Yeah if you can find an example it'd be great. Because I do not really know what I'd have to set up with my ISPs IP address. Thanks again |

| 599290 | 2007-10-08 07:10:00 | You're right, NAT should work OK, but I have not used your make/model router before so I'm not to sure on how to set it up correctly. When working remote in XP is good, but sometimes to get it working is a mission. Still looking for some easy instructions. |

| 599292 | 2007-10-08 07:35:00 | Remote desktop in Windows Firewall is turned off by default I think - mine is, open firewall in control panel then exceptions tab to check its ticked. (I Don't use XP firewall - its disabled.) The routers IP address is 192.168.1.1 with the PC's being 2 -255 (or should be) The last two pictures / instructions that speedy posted in the link look like the right settings. Good Luck. |

| 599293 | 2007-10-08 08:55:00 | Port '1987' is the port number I set for Internet Information Services, changed from the default port number '80', it was recommended for security reasons. The reason the computer has the IP address '192.168.1.100' is because I assigned it a static IP so port forwarding is easier. I've followed the instructions on portforward.com and I do have the port '3389' TCP/UDP forwarded. You can see if you look at the image link I posted up top. I read an old post somewhere where a guy had this same problem, but he didn't post a solution but said that once he got the ping command to work from remote locations that remote desktop started working too. I know that the ping command is disabled by default on this router (incoming) but enabled outgoing. I've looked around but got no idea how to enable this. |
