599066 2007-10-07 07:37:00 Hello

My computer is suffering from very choppy DVD playback and I can see no conceivable reason as to why it's doing this. It has ran perfectly for 9 months right up until the point that I turned the computer off last night. The very first thing I did after turning it on this morning was try to play a DVD and the playback was all over the place. Absolutely no settings whatsoever have been changed on my system since the last time it was working properly, less than 24 hours ago.

DMA is turned on, hardware acceleration is set to full, my video card drivers are up-to-date (updated a week ago in fact, since then I have watched many a DVD without a hitch), my computer is perfectly capable of smooth playback and has done so since I bought it, I have tried numerous DVDs, I have restarted many times, I have turned my computer off and on. While it is playing, albeit badly, the CPU usage never gets above 60%.

I assume there isn't a problem with the drive itself as it plays audio CDs and games just fine.

So I am at a complete loss as to why the bloody thing has stopped working properly, I am extremely frustrated, it is at present my only platform for watching DVDs and I would very much like to watch some. If anybody can help at all I would be extremely grateful.

Thankyou for listening to my rambling. I am using WinXP and generally play DVDs through Media Center but am having the same problem with Windows Media Player and HP DVD Play.

599067 2007-10-07 07:55:00 Try turning hardware acceleration either down or off.

I have seen that cause many problems as you describe. Why it should have changed over night is odd, but you never know. Worth a try.

Or as a last resort run system restore back to yesterday when it was working ok. I'd try the hardware acceleration first - easier.

599068 2007-10-07 07:59:00 how old is the dvd does it have scratches, how old is the dvd drive? JUST INSANE (6682)
599069 2007-10-07 08:29:00 The DVD-ROM drive was new when I bought it in January, the actual discs are fine, and as I said I've tried many different ones and still have the same problem.

I tried changing the hardware acceleration but still no luck :(

Thankyou though.

599070 2007-10-07 08:40:00 Are there any errors in your Windows error log? You have checked the drivers right, to see that they aren't corrupted? beeswax34 (63)
599071 2007-10-07 09:02:00 The drivers are fine to the best of my knowledge, the DVD drivers are the same as when I purchased the machine unless Windows Update has updated them.
The only hiccup I've ever had with drivers is when updating my GeForce drivers I get a message saying it has not passed Windows Logo testing. I've went ahead with the update anyway and have not had any problems until today. I don't believe that has anything to do with it but I could be wrong.

System restore will not let me restore because 'no changes have been made to my system'.

Where do I find this windows error log?

599072 2007-10-07 09:17:00 quickest way to open the event viewer is click start go to "run" in the box type in eventvwr press OK.That will allow you to look at the system logs, Application, security logs. It will show any "problems" hopefully.

Might pay to double check DMA is enabled, just in case something strange happened ?

Might want to give it a memory test while your at it, Memtest download in my sig. May as well rule that out as a possible cause.

599073 2007-10-07 09:53:00 The error log shows a whole lot of errors from last night before I turned the machine off, the best I can deduce is that a cord is loose inside the computer. Opening it up will void my warranty. Where does one draw the line?

I find it odd that something could have come loose but so far it makes the most sense. Thankyou for your help.

If its still under warranty then take it back as quickly as you can and get it fixed. God Bless event viewer.

599075 2007-10-08 02:02:00 Sometimes just turning DMA on in device manager doesn't work.

Have you tried manually editing the registry? (always works for me)
