2007-10-10 22:20:00 | Im sure this must of came up before but my searches have turned up rather empty so far. Anywaz on to my question, after just building a new rig im already sick of my 8600GT as its already bottlenecking my system and im getting **** fps on games like world in conflict when I have the settings maxed. so with crysis coming up ive decided to get yet another gpu. My choice is between an 8800gts 640mb version and a 2900 XT 512mb, they are both near identical in price on pricespy atm and most benchmarks ive seen are very close with the 2900 winning maybe a tiny bit more but its really a negligible difference in most cases and seems to depend on the application being used. so could I please get some recommendations from people as to what they would go for?

2007-10-10 22:54:00 | I have an XFX 8800GTS 640MB XXX Edition and it is great, clocks are running 650MHz core, 1620MHz shader and 2200MHz RAM and it is fully stable! :D On the stock cooler! :D and temps rarely hit 70°C! :D | The_End_Of_Reality (334) | |
2007-10-10 22:56:00 | With crysis coming out, there is a rumour that nvidia has a new card to go with the launch, at any rate, nvidia are already launching another product on the 28th of this month..... Oh the 2900pro is also out now and is supposedly on par with the gts640, not a good time to be purchasing a new card unless you have something horrible at present like i do........

Its the G92 which is just the G80 core using 65nm and a 256bit memory interface, should offer 8800GTS 320 performance for a lower pricepoint. The 8800GTS 320mb has been discontinued with the 640mb version getting an increase in shaders from 96 to 112 to differentiate it from the G92/8800GT. Theres a big article on Anandtech this morning about both the new nvidia and ati cards. Looks like the ATI will be the faster of the two. |

2007-10-10 23:50:00 | When I was looking at getting a high-end card recently I considered the HD2900XT. It sounds like an excellent card for the money. Apparently it's pretty loud though - but from what I remember reading it is closer to the 8800GTX than it is to the GTS - but for GTS money. My memory might be failing me there though... | Deane F (8204) | |

2007-10-11 00:36:00 | Yeah Pete, I know about the G92, I was refering to this forums.anandtech.com Highly doubt thats accurate, otherwise we would have heard something new about it. Everything I've read suggest its the G92 that will be release at the same time as Crysis. If nVidia had an ace up there sleeve we would have heard about it by now. I'd take this (www.dailytech.com) as fact before beleiving any speculation on the forums.

2007-10-11 01:07:00 | Well Pete, you obviously read the same forums as me.....It is my understanding that the G92 NDA and launch is released Oct 29th bought forward from Nov 12, and crysis isnt to be released until late Nov, so what is this (www.maximumpc.com sis_release) all about then! Anyway, not a good time to be laying down $500 on a new card!
