600172 2007-10-10 08:28:00 Hi guys,

Just built my gaming system, my first build, and now theres three people wanting me to build them computers. Only need to be good enough for browsing the net, email, simple games etc (ie, 8800GTX wont be nessasary  )

Thats something Iv been wondering, on my mobo backplate, there is no video out for the monitor, so If I didnt have the 8800gts, I couldnt have a monitor? What about PCs with on board graphics? Would I be better off going for on board graphics or is it cheaper to go with a small PCI-E vid card?

Can you please take a look at these and let me know what you think? Im very open to opinions so input is much appreciated!

MSI 945GM2-F SOCKET775 INTEL MATX MOTHERBOARD (www.computerlounge.co.nz) - $153

CORSAIR 1GB VALUE SELECT DDR2 667 (2 X 512) (www.computerlounge.co.nz) - $87

HITACHI DESKSTAR T7K160 (160GB) SATA II 8MB CACHE 7200RPM (www.computerlounge.co.nz) - $100

INTEL CORE 2 DUO E4400 2GHZ 800FSB LGA 775 (www.computerlounge.co.nz) - $212

RAIDMAX ELITE 208, BLACK, 420W ATX 2.0 PSU, 120MM FAN, CPU AIR DUCT (www.computerlounge.co.nz) - $107

If needed, a cheap GPU, maybe ~$130

Also Windows XP SP2 - $150

All opinions are very welcome!!

600173 2007-10-10 08:46:00 You'd probably be better going for AMD that way you can get a cheap nForce 430 board with integrated 6150 graphics. Not that you need a lot of graphical power for Windows XP but atleast it would give them the option of moving to Vista at a later date if they felt the need.

The Raidmax case and PSU should probably be ok for such a build. I wouldn't bother with Corsair Value Select, A-data is cheaper and just as good, possibly consider 2gb and a slightly cheaper CPU. From memory a 5000+ is around $180 and more than ample.

Ditch the Hitachi drive and get a Seagate, better warranty and I don't think they're much more expensive.

600175 2007-10-10 09:20:00 First, that particular Athlon 64 3000 is socket 939 and won't fit in the mobo...
Other than that, it looks not too bad.
I would probably spend the bit extra on the X2 4400.

600177 2007-10-10 10:35:00 You can get a decent ASUS matx board with integrated 6100 graphics for around $90 so that motherboard you've listed is probably overkill. Also at least get the 4400+ possibly consider a faster chip if the budget allows. Pete O'Neil (6584)
600178 2007-10-10 14:03:00 Go to www.pricespy.co.nz for computer components prices.

2x 1GB Dual Channel DDR2
$92.41 -(Better/faster ram)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, dual core, socket AM2, 3GHz
$248.00 -(Better/faster cpu)

Samsung 500GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive
$201.38 -(Bigger harddrive for heaps of stuff)

Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H AM2 690G mATX
$137.34 -(Better motherboard, newer chipset then the old 430 chipset).

errrrrrrrr.....well IF the board has 'onboard' vid then of course the backplate will have a 'hole' to accomodate this.......if not then theres no reason for it.
