600992 2007-10-12 22:41:00 My computer-literacy challenged friend about whom I have posted before has another problem. She can't connect to the internet. She is an Xtra customer, so my initial thought was just to blame them, but now I'm not so sure.

She is running WinXP with integrated ethernet.

Here is the situation as I see it:

Her D-Link ADSL modem shows a solid ADSL light, so I assume the actual ADSL is OK. I have turned the modem off and on - makes no difference.

Her network connection under Windows shows "acquiring network address" and never gets out of that.

I can't ping anywhere - I get "destination host unreachable". I can ping 127.0.0.1 .

Device Manager says the network adapter "device is working properly".

I have tried:

Uninstalling/re-installing the network adapter - no difference.

Setting the network adapter properties to a specific IP address rather than using DHCP, and a specific DNS address - makes no difference, except the "acquiring network address" message goes away, as you'd expect.

So I am suspecting that either the CAT5 cable from the PC to the modem is stuffed, or the on-board ethernet has gone belly-up.

My next step is to try a different cable and install an ethernet card to see if either of those work.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

TIA.

600993 2007-10-12 23:15:00 Try another modem/router. If you do don't forget to configure it for her ISP.

600994 2007-10-12 23:29:00 I'm loth to try that as a first step as the only spare I have available is my own in-use one, and I don't want to run the risk of messing up my own setup as a result of of reconfiguring it for her.

The modem looks OK. The ADSL light is hard on, but the status light flashes - does that mean anything?

600995 2007-10-12 23:30:00 Firewall problem.

Winsock corruption

Can you get into the router config to check the settings and confirm it is actually connected to Xtra

Using ipconfig does the router gateway IP show

Try this
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

600996 2007-10-12 23:31:00 You don't say whether this is an existing or new connection that has not been used before. If the latter you definitely need to contact Xtra as ADSL may not have actually been enabled yet or there may be a problem with it, despite the modem's DSL light being on. I have experienced this myself.

Failing that, the suggestion to try another modem/router is a good one. Much easier to eliminate that before the network card.

600997 2007-10-12 23:53:00 This is not a new connection - it has worked OK up to a couple of days ago, which is why my first reaction was to blame Xtra - I suppose they could have trashed something anyway. My friend's initial reaction was to phone Xtra, but after being on hold for 30mins (twice) she lost heart and called me.

Firewall/Winsock - possible, I guess, but she is not someone who would be fiddling with anything, and she has not made any changes to her system (she wouldn't know how or even where to begin).

How do I get into the config for her D-Link modem - will it be 192.168.0.1?

600998 2007-10-13 00:02:00 Use ipconfig and the gateway there is the router IP
Usually 10.1.1.1 I think for D-Link

600999 2007-10-13 00:06:00 Or if that doesn't work try 192.168.1.1

Don't rule out the problem being with Xtra or Telecom. I had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago and after eliminating DNS settings, the cable and modem/router (I have another modem) my ISP was able to confirm that the problem was with Telecom. My ISP contacted Telecom and it was fixed by the next day.

It is pretty easy to configure to her ISP. All you have to change is the user name and password. Takes about 30 seconds.

Yup I would say its 10.1.1.1, thats what it is for this Dlink.

I would if the router has it click on run wizard. Once you log into the interface.

See if the info in here is still correct.
