601202 2007-10-14 00:47:00 When I open Word or excel 2002 in a limited user account the Office XP configuration dialogue box runs and continues to start and stop until I press cancel when Word will open. This does not happen if I change the account to administrator (Win XP).
How can I fix this?

You may need to put the Office CD back in and let it reinstall the components it wants, change the limited account to administrator, and see if that does any good .

To turn it off completely You can try this, it should stop the windows installer from running, but it wont be the total fix, as then no programs will install without turning this back on .

Click - Start > run > type: gpedit . msc > local computer policy > Administrative Templates > Windows Components >Windows Installer> double click "disable Windows Installer " choose always and apply . The problem is that the installer is then turned off and you may have to turn it back on at a later point . This is a temp hack only!

601204 2007-10-14 09:38:00 Sorry but the Group Policy Editor is not included in XP Home, only XP Pro, (I'm assuming you have Home, you havent specified) but you could try this

There's no easy way to edit Group Policy on a stock XP Home; you have to edit the registry manually. There's a Microsoft document available at

download.microsoft.com

that tells you which keys do what.
Havent checked this, tis a Excel file, I dont have that installed :)

601205 2007-10-14 20:33:00 Opps! sorry about that, didn't think about XP hm.

The reg fix is only a work around, not a full fix for the installer problem.

The xls download has truckloads of Info in it, its titled for windows 2003 server.
To change the reg key in XP HM and stop the installer. Open regedit go to -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\Installer
Create or modify dword called "DisableMSI"
Set one of the following value depending upon option
0 signifies that windows installer is fully enabled
1 signifies that users can install only those programs that a system administrator assigns (offers on the desktop) or publishes (adds them to Add or Remove Programs). This is the default behavior of Windows Installer on Windows Server 2003 family when the policy is not configured.
2 signifies Windows installer is fully disabled.

Fixing it is the better bet.

What happens in you let the installer run, It should at a some point ask for files from the Office CD. ?

The other thing you can try is open word, go to Help, then normally there is something there saying detect and repair. run that, it may also ask for the Office CD.

601206 2007-10-14 21:47:00 Normally when I have come across this, adding the user to the administrator group fixes the problem. Sometimes it asks for the CD but once Word has completed the install for the user then it is done and then take away the admin rights.

I have also had this occur when a third party program using Access database files started the install process in Word etc due to an error in the third party program. But by memory adding the user to the admin group as above fixed the problem.
