601952 2007-10-16 01:08:00 Hi guys,
I've recently upgraded my PC and have come across something i havn't seen before. There is a standard 4pin power connector on the motherboard (same as hdd drive and CD ROM connectors). I read the manual to see what it was for and it says it "provides an extra 12V for the PCI-E x16 slot in order to increase the stability of your graphics card. You can attach the 4-pin connector to power supply directly".
My question is: is this power connector necessary if i already plug a 4pin connector straight into my graphics card? or do i need both?
My motherboard is a Albatron K8SLI-AM2 and my graphics card a 7900GS.

Cheers
Jimmy

601953 2007-10-16 01:22:00 I don't think you need both. I think as long as you plug in the 6-pin PCIE power cable into the card, it should be just fine. qazwsxokmijn (102)
601954 2007-10-16 01:31:00 Thanks gaz. From memory there isn't a 6-pin connector which plugs into my 7900GS, it is a standard 4-pin connector just like the one on this new motherboard. I will confirm when i get home. I could be wrong Jimmy D (2061)

It doesn't really matter they both do the same thing (provide 12v) except one was designed specifically for video cards where as the other is multipurpose.

601956 2007-10-16 04:57:00 my bad, it is a 6pin connector that connects to my 7900. It seems to be working fine without the 4pin one on the motherboard. I guess i'll just leave it Jimmy D (2061)
