601796 2007-10-15 10:06:00 i assume you mean 2x 256mb sticks. 512 meg is quite low for vista. upgrading to 1 or even 2gb will solve that issue instantly. as vista itself can be a hog. Cho (12330)
601797 2007-10-15 10:08:00 sorry error in typing there.... 2 x 512 mb.... could one of them gone without me knowing? runnerjp (12926)
601798 2007-10-15 10:12:00 If you can't afford more RAM, then turn Aero off and change the theme back to Windows Basic or if you're really desperate, Windows Classic. That should help slightly with RAM usage.

Otherwise the best solution would be to get more RAM, atleast 1GB+ as a min. for Vista.

601799 2007-10-15 10:13:00 is a possibility, what ya need is either a linux disk, hehe, or a bootable cd with memtest86 on it, to test the ram for faults. then ya will know if one of them in munched or not. if ram has been killed, it will usually eventually corrupt the system if left in so best be checking it out before that happens. happend to me when half my board died, network, 1 512mb stick went then windows died and eventually the whole system. 601800 2007-10-15 10:16:00 thats the thing...i allready have 1gb of ram lol.... windows vista does not recognise that i have nay ram tho when i look at properties to see how much it has :(... would print off report but have not got access to internet on comp as in student house lol...

how could i tell if one of the rams have "broke"

601801 2007-10-15 10:21:00 http://www.memtest.org/ bootable cd / floppy image to run tests on suspect ram.

and not sure if it works with vista but www.cpuid.com to get hardware info. ram installed cpu and so on.

601802 2007-10-15 13:16:00 just check system properties in device manager or clik startbuttn/run then type in dxdiag and hit enter.......or clik up task manager and goto performance/physical memory.......if any of those lists your 1gb of ram then it aint 'broke'......and yes vista will CHEW up ram big time......also in task manager if you look at the processes tab you can easily check whats using your ram... drcspy (146)
601803 2007-10-15 22:25:00 Vista prioritizes loading and if it needs memory then it offloads the unimportant stuff that Windows keeps in memory to make things faster (e.g. opening a program still in memory is faster then loading from the harddrive again). Nothing to worry about but more is always better. trinsic (6945)
601804 2007-10-16 00:16:00 Use ReadyBoost as a temporary solution if you really must. If that makes a difference, then you do need extra RAM. beeswax34 (63)
