601318 2007-10-14 19:20:00 As most of us know, the further away you are from the exchange the worst your connection well be right. So how about this. You have two people who both use the same ISP, are both on the same plan, and live the same distance from the exchange, but the only differance is one lives 50ks from the ISP and the other lives 1000ks from the ISP should they both have the same connection speeds etc.
:)

601319 2007-10-14 19:26:00 It's not as simple as that.
There are other factors that affect the speed of ADSL like how many other users are connected on the same exchange.

601320 2007-10-14 19:43:00 Ok lets say the exchanges have the same number of people connected to them. What I'm trying to say here is every thing being equal.
:)

601321 2007-10-14 20:55:00 Well all things being equal they'll obviously have the same speeds. But this ain't a perfect world and there's far too many things that definitly won't be the same. Greg (193)
601322 2007-10-14 21:00:00 not sure the point of your question but yes if network differences are ignored then distance from the exchange, the size & type of cables between you and the exchange, the type of equipment and wiring in your house, and what other signals are running in or around the cables are the only factors - still quite a few as you can see.

In practice 2 people at the same distance should get fairly similar connection speeds in most cases, but measured throughput can vary greatly due to the network & loading etc.

:)

But perhaps they have different adsl modems, different wiring, different jackpoints, different malware on their PCs etc etc

601324 2007-10-14 21:39:00 In other words the people who have answered above don't know.
:)

601325 2007-10-14 21:43:00 or they do, read the answers again.

basically it's a qualified yes.

601326 2007-10-14 22:12:00 Answer is yes but in theory it is no. Like said before there are too many things to factor in that makes it impossible to tell. trinsic (6945)
601327 2007-10-15 05:42:00 I think in theory it can be true but in practice, there's no way its going to work. Too many variables to actually be calculated and/or controlled. beeswax34 (63)
