601219 2007-10-14 03:43:00 ok firstly thanks to those who helped me with my last problem, a friend of mine downdloaded & reinstalled my comp back to running normal...
i know im gonna get stick for this but...
i STUPIDly put another WRONG memory into one of the memory slots?(with the original still in), when i turned it on we could smell burning & the monitor wouldnt turn on, so turned the computer off straight away...
one of the memory slots has burn marks,
weve tried it again but the monitor does not turn on,
im guessing the motherboard is shot, but crossing my fingers there is some MIRACLE way of it being alright???(ok im dreaming)

it was a 7VT600P-RZ (-C) motherboard and was wondering if i would have to purchase the exact same motherboard

601220 2007-10-14 03:58:00 You dont have to buy the same mobo, but you'll be lucky to find another Socket A mobo.

Theyre pretty much obsolete these days.

You may have to buy another more recent one. Like AM2, 754 (altho these are pretty scarce too), or 939 mobo.

If you want to stay with AMD.

Only thing is, you'll have to buy another CPU and maybe different ram.

Depending on what mobo you buy, and what kind of ram it takes.

im trying to work it out without taking it in but i think thats what ill have to do, does anyone know how many hundreds it would all cost?

601222 2007-10-14 05:12:00 It depends on WHAT you want on the motherboard, (firewire, USB 2 / SATA / 8 channel sound etc), on how much it'll cost .

And the speed / kind of CPU (Intel / AMD) etc .

And the memory

You can keep everything else in the case (CD/DVD/hard drives etc) .

Just put them back in, after you get a new motherboard/CPU and maybe ram .

You may have to spend upto 400 or so if you have to buy some more ram .

Maybe less if you buy a mobo, if it uses the ram you've got now .

601223 2007-10-14 05:18:00 Unless you are lucky you wont be able to get a socket A motherboard, just looking at the spe'c of that board it also has DDR RAM & AGP Graphic Slot, to replace items required you would need.

New Board - More than likely have PCI-E graphic slot, although you may be able to find a AGP ?
New CPU - size of your choice
Memory - Old memory wont work, as the board will be either DDR2 or DDR3 - your was DDR
New Graphic Card > PCI-E, AGP will not fit in a PCI-E Slot

As for cost - well that depends on what you are able to spend.

Almost forgot - you may have to have a new Hard Drive also, depending on what your current one is, as most motherboards come with only 1 IDE slot for the optical drives these days, and 2-6 SATA for the HardDrives.

601224 2007-10-14 07:14:00 .is it worth while me doing it myself...

Seeing what your first post said, no. Take it to a proper tech.

601225 2007-10-14 19:31:00 Yes, PCTECH is correct.
Many of us independent tekkies hold spare parts for just such occasions and a recycled mobo would not cost much, plus a charge for fitting and any consequential adjustments.

601226 2007-10-14 20:54:00 ok thanks for that
i will take it in this week, im just worried about the cost, the most i might be able to spend is about $600...and we are still paying it off as well.

Would have been cheaper to take it in and get the RAM done then wouldn't it? Now.....................

601228 2007-10-14 22:40:00 I'm just impressed they managed to get the ram into the slot at all... that's what the bump in the middle is supposed to prevent! Erayd (23)
