2007-10-16 08:31:00 | I don't care, really. I've switched to FF ever since I've grown bored with IE6....and never looked back. FF opens in 1 or 2 seconds and the most I've ever seen FF ate memory was 130MB. Besides, I have 2GB of memory.

2007-10-16 08:50:00 | I've always used Firefox and before that Firebird. At the moment I am enjoying using this 2.0.0.7 hybrid, you can add all your usual extensions, you can switch of the AOL extras, just look in the options, one click turns them off, it won't interfere with your normal Firefox install, and finally looks as if the AOL engineers have solved the memory leak problems, get it from here: www.majorgeeks.com For your info: Generated: Tue Oct 16 2007 22:17:05 GMT+1300 (New Zealand Daylight Time) User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8pre) Gecko/20071015 Firefox/2.0.0.7 Navigator/9.0 Build ID: 0000000000 Enabled Extensions: [21] - Aardvark 2.1: karmatics.com - Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3: http://adblockplus.org/ - Auto Copy 0.6.4: http://autocopy.mozdev.org - BookmarksHome 1.5.2: http://bookmarkshome.mozdev.org - CookieCuller 1.3.1: http://cookieculler.mozdev.org/ - Copy Plain Text 0.3.3: http://mozmonkey.com/ - Delete Icons 0.1.2: www.gozer.org - Duplicate Tab 0.9.1: http://twanno.mozdev.org/ - Fasterfox 2.0.0: http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/ - FEBE 5.0: customsoftwareconsult.com - Flashblock 1.5.4.1: http://flashblock.mozdev.org/ - FlashGot 0.6.9: http://flashgot.net - MR Tech Local Install 5.3.2.5: www.mrtech.com - Nightly Tester Tools 1.3b3: www.oxymoronical.com - NoScript 1.1.7.2: http://noscript.net - Password Exporter 1.0.6: http://passwordexporter.fligtar.com - Paste and Go 2 0.8: http://pasteandgo2.mozdev.org/ - PDF Download 0.9.3.1: http://www.pdfdownload.org - Show Image 0.4.2: http://showimage.mozdev.org/ - Stylish 0.5.3: userstyles.org - Super DragAndGo 0.2.6: http://morphis.eu.org/ Installed Themes: [1] - Netscape (default): http://www.mozilla.org/ Installed Plugins: (8) - Adobe Acrobat - Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U3 - Mozilla Default Plug-in - RealPlayer Version Plugin - RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In (32-bit) - Shockwave Flash - Silverlight Plug-In - Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library

2007-10-16 10:22:00 | I use opera 99% of the time and revert to IE when some dumb @rse website does not stick to standards... Even the ANZ.co.nz works on Opera... No memory leaks... Old John D has been about for yonks and his credibility is still intact...

2007-10-16 11:00:00 | open source is good. GPLv3 i have not read, but if it says ya cant sell the software using it, is kinda annoying. if i take a dead project, change it and rename it, of course citing the original devs, and name or what not, i should be able to sell it, even as open source. thing i like about it most, is being able to learn how someone done something, and as im a crap programmer is really helpful, not that ive written a program since year 1 BIT hehe.

2007-10-16 20:29:00 | I just ran an unscientific test, double clicked firefox, then double clicked IE.. Of course FF showed up about 1.5 seconds after IE... so FF -FAIL! FF = 7336K RAM <===OOOPPPS that was a warning message about an FF Crash... get that 7736 for a popup message box... hahahaha... GREAT PROGRAMMING GUYS! FF=21568K RAM (now that its display the google search page like IE is) IE = 16488K RAM So FF FAILS!!! Obviously a bit more complex than one old smart @rse can figure out without some decent monitoring tools. But my best friend OPERA hogs 40720K of ram... mmm oh well with 3 gig IDGAS!

2007-10-16 20:51:00 | I use Firefox because it adds features through various extensions, allowing me to choose the functionality (and resource cost) I want rather than having it all chosen by a vendor. This is the whole "Hey, we can do it better" attitude he refers to. I believe the "You suck" attitude he criticises in the second half would be a more accurate comment on his own writing in this article than about the FSF. The FSF are idealists with a particular vision - you would expect them to have strong opinions about it. That he hasn't even managed to get their opinion right (they're not anti-commercial and neither is the GPL - you can use GPL software for anything) is truly scary. If this guy used to be a good journalist he's fallen quite a long way. It's so hard to find decent journalists - almost all of them seem to either focus on one side of the story only or lack any original thought at all. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium anywhere. A good journalist should show both sides of the story, explain things in simple terms to the readers and speculate on people's behaviour and interactions. Very few journalists are good.

2007-10-16 21:07:00 | I think he is more of a commentator than a journalist. I agree with TG in general though, even IT coverage can be way too one sided even at the best of times. Its like CNN has infected the planet with its bad inglit as well...

2007-10-16 23:36:00 | FF=21568K RAM (now that its display the google search page like IE is) IE = 16488K RAM So FF FAILS!!! When will people stop being so stupid. If you think IE only uses 16488K you are greatly mistaken as there is so much loaded within the OS unlike FF. Without seeing the Windows code there is no way of working out how much ram IE uses but at a guess because of Windows programing I would say it would be way more than FF.
