601739 2007-10-15 20:56:00 Telstraclear have a message on there tv service on channel 97 that says as of november which i have been told they are increasing the picture quality of the tv picture and the function of the decoders so as telstra customers can access wwe and pay perview boxing using the red button which we can't currently do. They also go on to say they are spending over $1million dollars upgrading there network which may also include the internet.I rung telstra yesterday and the guy told me that telstra are also going to use new FTTN for those who dont understand that means Fibre To The Node. 601740 2007-10-16 00:24:00 Still excellent on Kapiti Coast. Just got 4312kbps down and 1805kbps up. It has been consistent since the upload was doubled. Cheers. Pato (2463)
601741 2007-10-16 01:57:00 Turned out that for some reason my modem hadn't been reconfigured to download at 10mbit/s. They've manually changed it and I can now get between 7-9 mbit/s which I'm more than happy with.

I'll play it by ear regarding the slowdown issue, as they said that it is due to network congestion. Maybe these changes will make a difference.

Connection still slows down a bit in the evening (to about 200-300kbit/s), but is still usable. I think it's just due to high load in my area.

Your picture shows a nice 10Mb connection.

I do NOT trust Speedtest as far as I can spit and I will explain why.

I can D/L on my 10MB cable connection constantly around 9-10MB (around 1100KB/s) on multisource downloads such as International Torrents at any time of the day including evenings. Just like you Speedtest may only shows a max of 4-6Mb in the evenings which I 100% know is incorrect.

Bottom line, run real life multisource downloads (to ensure they source can handle it) tests. Do not rely on any of the any broadband Speed Test site as they can be busy themselves giving you a incorrect reading. It is also possible certain routes to the Speed test site are busy which will also give you a lower result.

Nothing like running the test manually yourself to see what you really get.

In the evenings (between 4pm and 12am) I get anywhere between 100kbit - 2mbit/s speeds . This is not just speedtest figures, but actual multi-connection HTTP downloads . It's not as good as it used to be, as I would be able to get close to 4mbit constantly 24/7 a few months ago whilst on the Highspeed 10G plan .

Certainly individuals may be having problems, but Speedtest itself is not accurate itself, or even remotely accurate. HTTP is not multi-connection unless you are using a program like Getright. Very few web sites will give you over 2MB on a single connection due to load balancing.

I actually think it "may" be accurate for testing connections 5MB or below, due to the amount of bandwidth available to the Speedtest site and the individual hops during busier times. As for testing much over 5Mb forget it, you may as well lick your finger and put it in the air.

I may run some real life 8PM Downloads vs Speedtest "tests" and do some screen shots, maybe start a new thread :)

Will be interested to see your comparison. When I say multi-http connection I am using a download manager, to grab a file of a reputable website which I know has sufficient capacity (i.e. I can saturate my connection during off-peak times with the same number of connections).

If you are using a download manager then sure, sound like you are having performance issues. I see the Telstra Website is still listing issues with digital TV, so hopefully things will get back to normal when they fix it, although they are normal here in CHCH for me.
