| 601244 | 2007-10-14 21:58:00 | Hi there. I am still on the xtra 'Go Large' plan. For the past 4 - 5 days I have been noticing very slow international traffic. NZ speed tests return very good speeds [3Mbs] International tests [UK;USA] are very poor [300Kbps]. It will not surprise anyone to hear the helpdesk were no help [asked me to go through laborious physical checks - when the problem was obviously not on my side because of my excellent local speeds]. I suspect there is a problem with the international gateway. Anyone else having problems? Funny but i have just watched over 2 hours of documentaries from the USA on xtra go-large and it never blinked once. That was Sat afternoon, but yesterday was fine too. So go-large is fine here in the Waikato... And even today its fine... |

| 601246 | 2007-10-15 00:21:00 | Sigh. I guess since other users of Go Large are having this problem too it must be a result of either traffic shaping specific to that plan, or some international gateway issue that is Go Large specific. As is always the case, the Xtra representatives I spoke to didn't even have a clue about what traffic shaping or an international gateway is. They repeatedly directed me to a New Zealand based speed test [I repeatedly told them my local speeds were very good, and not a problem at all]. When I asked to be escalated to the next level of support they said they would not do this until they had taken me through steps to check the physical connections etc at my house were good. Repeated pointless restartings of the router and PC, unpluggings of other phones etc ensued. Every time I pointed out that if there was a problem with cabling / jackpoints etc the local traffic would be affected too, which is not at all the case, they merely repeated themselves, ignoring the stupidity of what they were asking. If Telecom would just admit somewhere that they are heavily shaping Go Large, or that their international gateway is overloaded, I would be happy just to know the cause of the problem, and given that Go Large suits my needs I would just put up with the status quo. I truly have no faith at all in Telecom as a residential ISP, and it is my view that they treat their customers with contempt. If it weren't for the legacy Go Large plan I am on (which they rolled out without realising their infrastructure couldn't handle it - a typical scenario for this train wreck of a company) I would be delighted to permanently terminate any relationship with Telecom. As it is, I will have to wait a little longer until the government regulation brings about a more realistic broadband market. Sorry for the long rant. I do suspect that a number of the other users of this forum feel the same way. |

If p2p software runs slowly I would suspect it's being throttled as per the go large terms..... I find that the first 1-2M goes fast(ish) then after that few Meg's the speed drops right back. Only on international downloads Must the the throttling kicking in |
