601729 2007-10-15 07:28:00 I am on Telstraclear's cable network in Wellington. Have had excellent speed and reliability since I signed up earlier in the year (would consistently get 2-4mbit/s download speed anytime of the day).

Recently I have run into two issues:
1) The internet connection will degrade in speed within several hours of the router/modem being rebooted.
2) In the last few days, the connection has just been bad overall, fluctuating significantly in speed.

Has anyone else been experiencing any of these issues, and if so, do you have any suggestions as to what I should look at? I have replaced my router recently, and that has made no difference.

601730 2007-10-15 08:51:00 This is probably not much help, but I'm in Chch on Telstra cable and am having no problems - just tested and got 4Mbps down and 2 up - and I can't remember the last time I booted the modem or router. Deane F (8204)
601731 2007-10-15 09:24:00 i did see an add on TV with which telstra are pushing for more cable customers, well i assume they are, with their big local area adverts. possibly an influx of new customers in the wellington area starting to congest the cable lines. maybe not the cause but worth checking out. 601732 2007-10-15 09:55:00 Mine's gone bad too.

I'm only getting 2-5mbps down and 1mbps up.

It should be 10/2 and I usually get 9/1.8 or so.

601733 2007-10-15 10:13:00 Anyone called Telstra up and asked if they were having line issues or maybe some maintenance/upgrading perhaps to handle more customers?

PS. Only 5mb??? Woosh = 50KBps usually:lol:

I mean, I used to have a car without AC!

Just got mine fixed yesterday - it was slowly getting worse over the last 4-5 weeks, the connection was up and down daily and speed all over the place.

The Telstra tech that came told me that the settings needed to be adjusted on the modem. I was told that they have been upgrading/updating their systems over the last few months and some modems are being affected, some aren't.
He went into the modem settings and went ewwwww - theres the problem, he connected his little box of tricks, did some adjustments and its been back to normal and rock solid ever since. The settings he was referring to are Here - modem shot (www.imagef1.net.nz) to access my modem he used the address of http://192.168.100.1 then went to signal. The original power Level on the upstream was sitting at around 73dBmV, he said it was meant to be between 30 -45. Now it sits around 35-42. He also said that telstra reboot the modems from their end every so offten to refresh them. When he was here yesterday, the modem channel was 2 today its on 3.

Just to show its changing all the time, Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) is a second shot of the signal taken 5 minutes after the first, notice the channel number has changed as well as the power level.

Thanks wainuitech. That looks really interesting - I never knew that this sort of stuff was generally accessible. My settings are within the parameters you've mentioned, but I'll give them a call anyway.

601738 2007-10-15 20:23:00 Actually looking at things more in depth, most of my parameters match up to yours, with the exception of the power level. Where yours is around 7-8, mine floats between 0.2 and 0.3dBmV. Maybe that's got something to do with it. somebody (208)
