602513 2007-10-17 13:36:00 I was looking at upgrading from a 6200tc to a 7900gs. I've checked and I have 2 free 4-pin molex connectors to plug into the adaptor to make a single 6pin plug.

However I've seen that for a single 7900gs card they reccomend a minimum of a +12v rail giving 20amps, and a 400w PSU.

But my PSU says this

+12v rail 18amps
+12v rail 18amps
+12v rail total 29amps

Does this mean that I'm 2 amps to low to run this card, or that I have 9 amps more than I need?

Can someone tell me if the 7900gs will run in my system, other specs are...

AMD Sempron 1.8ghz 3000+
1gb DDR 400
nVidia 6200tc
80gb Seagate Sata
320gb Seagate Sata2
420w Enermax noisetaker PSU

602514 2007-10-17 19:03:00 It's the combined amperage that counts, so you will be sweet. I would highly recommend jumping up to a lower end 8xxx series card, (8600gts) or go for a 7900gt, rather than a GS. I (still) have a 7600GT, and it's an amazing card for the $$$. wratterus (105)
602515 2007-10-17 22:12:00 The 7900GS is just under a 8600GTS in performance but a $40 difference. May/may not be worth it.

Nvidia are releasing the 8800GT and new 8800GTS's if you are willing to wait a little while.

602516 2007-10-17 22:40:00 Thanks for the advice, but I've managed to find a new 7900gs 512mb for $200 around the price of the 256mb 8600gt.

The differences are the 7900gs has the 256-bit memory where as the 8600gt is 128mb. It also his a higher memory bandwidth and other features like that.

I did consider the 8600 series, but as I can only afford up to the 8600gt I decided to go for the 7900gs.

Although tomshardware shows the 8600gt getting better 3dmark06 scores, it also shows it getting lower fps on most games. (some the 8600gt has higher fps)

P.S. the 7900gs still performs faster than a 7600gt, according to tomshardware vgs chart.

Thanks again for the help!

602517 2007-10-18 00:33:00 Personally i think you may have an issue if the 2 free molex connectors are on the same rail as the card requires 20a and the one rail can only supply 18a. The whole point of having separate rails is to separate the load on the PSU, one rail cant just start drawing more power from the other rail. Pete O'Neil (6584)

Thats a good deal.

Regarding the 7600GT comment, I wasn't recommending the card for you, as you obviously wanted something with a little more grunt. I should have made that a little more clear, though, sorry. ;)
