602735 2007-10-18 08:08:00 After reviewing plenty of free hosts I settled on Netfirms (www.netfirms.com)in USA for my free host, which include free software for creating a web page (but may need you own domain name). You can get a free sub domain name - but of course your URL could be a bit long: e.g. yourwebname.netfirms.com. One way to get a free domain name was to join a computer forum in the USA and get awarded a domain name based on your quality and/or number of posts (I will try to find the site)

Like many free hosts you have to display their ad banner at the top. There are limitations with free hosts - bandwith and upload limits, server size, exclusion of videos and linked flash scripts, web code restrictions to use (Perl, PHP ,CGI, etc), inactivity limits, etc... The most critical I have heard is the bandwith - if it is exceeded i.e. thousands of hits - then your site may instantly shut down; Also free hosts can disappear...

Netfirms host servers have been pretty stable, they have front page server extensions, and they allow your own ads (Google, Amazon, etc) with about 4.5 million users for their total (i.e. not just free plan) customer base. Hence this was enough for me to use them, and they have been pretty reliable. Though to be fair there have been mixed reviews (www.free-webhosts.com)lately.

I started with this review list (www.free-webhosts.com)of over 300 USA free hosts...

But what sort of site content do you want? To run a info service, online business, information? tutorials? Because a blog service may be sufficient (google blogger, wordpress, etc) which are generally easier to maintain...

602736 2007-10-18 09:21:00 Google Pages is pretty good i rekon! Great for someone who wants to put some tidy, organised info on the web for free. jermsie (6820)
602737 2007-10-18 09:23:00 I love Popfly. Digg + Flickr anyone??? beeswax34 (63)
602738 2007-10-18 09:38:00 I haven't tried Popfly.Digg & Flickr, but Google Pages looks ok to try. But can you create extra internal pages to link to? Or is it a drop down format for long text essay type entries? (like Google blogs). kahawai chaser (3545)
602739 2007-10-18 21:11:00 It depends what you want to do. Why not use a Wiki like http://www.wikidot.com ? You can grab your own name whatever.wikidot.com, and then develop it either by yourself, or use it like a "real" Wiki and have people help you.

Just a thought! :)

602740 2007-10-18 21:41:00 I've used countless free hosts and they are invariably awful.

Either they are loaded with ads or can vanish completely with all your files (which has happened to me). I recall web1000 being good, but I haven't used one in a while.

Do you have any webdesign friends? I suggest you pitch in with them on a US host like hostgator.com (which I use and is Awesome) and you will have all the stuff you need.

You could make a subdomain each that links to your respective parts of the space. With 10 of you, you would only be paying a few bucks a month.

You will need to buy a domain. It's $38 a Year from iServe and that isn't very much really. Link that to your subdomain on hostgator and you're away.

602742 2007-10-20 08:18:00 You can get free hosting at www.liway.com, but it's post-2-pay, which means you need to post on the forum to use their hosting, and get your domains from www.domains4less.co.nz. The cheapest domains in NZ, owns telecoms prices.

I use both of them.

That is operated by Web Drive. I don't know how they can sell them for that, as the cost price of a domain is not much less. When you take into consideration staff and transaction fees they must be making a loss on that.
