602401 2007-10-18 05:14:00 When you connect via modem, is it the same ISP as your broadband connection? Many ISP's block POP and SMTP access from an IP address that is not inside their own domain.
I have had the same issue with IHUG blocking POP and SMTP access from an Xtra address.

602402 2007-10-18 06:42:00 Both the broadband and dialup accounts are with ihug. Difference being when I log in with broadband it is as "username@ihug.co.nz" whilst with dialup it is just "username".

The fault happened suddenly 2 days ago.

I emailed netsmart today and their tech has been looking into it but hasn't yet found the problem.

I'm really scratching my head here. We have several computers, none of which can access the netsmart site through my broadband account. A family member came over last night with his laptop, hooked into the wireless network, and couldn't get his email (which is one on my domain). He'd checked it earlier in the day from his place on dial up without problems.

If it happens on different computers with different OSs and with different routers then it has to be the netsmart end. Doesn't it? Is my logic faulty?

OK, we're cooking with gas!!!

Problem was at Netsmart end and has now been resolved .

As I understand it the problem was as follows:

- The IP gurus who control IP addresses kept some in reserve for future expansion . Every so often they release a few more and the ISPs snap them up so they can expand their services .

- Netsmart's firewall blocks the unused ones but syncs up to a list somewhere to update it .

- It looks like ihug acquired another range in the last few days and . . .

- Netsmart's firewall didn't sync to the list for some reason

The tech has solved my problem by manually releasing my one and will no doubt be actively trying to sort his syncing out .

Netsmart have always been very good, efficient, on to it and a great firm to deal with .

This took a while to resolve as I muddied the waters a bit by not knowing if I'd done something in my recent efforts to solve my router disconnecting problems (which was solved just as this happened!) .

A night's sleep (my own preferred course of action to clear the head when computer issues are confused) and he solved it first thing in the morning . Excellent .
