602598 2007-10-17 21:24:00 I have networked my laptop (OS Vista) and my PC (OS XP) and the network runs fine - no problems there. I have the Internet sharing working (the PC is connected) but I cannot run the laptop through the network (and then onto the web) with Zone Alarm running. Obviously I do not want to shutdown Zone Alarm but it does not work with ZA running. Each time the laptop attempts to access the network with ZA running it uses another IP address. (It most probably does the same without ZA running but that is no problem.) I can add that address to the trusted zone and all is ok until the next time I attempt to access when the laptop uses another address. I don't want to continue adding IP addresses for the rest of my life, so how can I get around this problem? Thanks. Roscoe (6288)
602599 2007-10-18 01:22:00 Can't you just add the network connection into a trusted zone so you don't have to keep doing that? beeswax34 (63)

602601 2007-10-18 02:30:00 I take it youre on dialup??

Give the LAN manual ip's, (dont use obtain an ip address automatically).

Thats most probably why they change, when u reboot.

Change the networked PC's ip adress to 192.168.0.2 or whatever, subnet 255.255.255.0 and the gateway 192.168.0.1 (the main PC's ip).

And put your ISP DNS server ips in whatever they are, underneath.

And in ZA, you have to put the network stuff in (it may give you the name of the card). Thats what goes in (not a single ip address).

602602 2007-10-18 03:02:00 Assuming your gateway is 192.168.0.1 you can also add the complete range to ZA then it will work without setting a static IP.
Open ZA in the Firewall/zones Add IP Range top IP 192.168.0.1 Second IP 192.168.0.255 call it what ever you want click Apply. That will allow all addresses from the router.

602603 2007-10-19 02:06:00 are you using the free version of zone alarm? if so this version does not support internet sharing. beama (111)
602604 2007-10-22 00:59:00 To Wainuitech,

Thanks so much for that solution. Works well as you knew it would. I have had a few unreliable answers and yours is the first informed reply I have had. It seems such a simple remedy and very easy to implement.

Yes, you are right, I do have dialup. I don't use the net enough to justify broadband although I may do so when and if it becomes cheaper.

The next thing I need to do is enable ICS so we can have the two computers online at the same time.

I'll try to work that out for myself and may have to call on you if I get stuck.

Thanks.

Roscoe.

602605 2007-10-22 01:01:00 As Beama said unless its a paid version of ZA, you wont get the ICS option.

In ZA.

602606 2007-10-22 01:17:00 That's not a big problem, so long as one is able to access I'm not too worried. Thanks for that.

Roscoe.

602607 2007-10-22 01:27:00 To Wainuitech,

I have another problem that I hope you can solve. I am an avid user of Cool Edit and have been using it on Windows 98 - now superseeded by XP and now by Vista. When recording with Cool Edit in XP I can access the Windows Mixer and adjust recording and playback levels no problem. Perhaps you have seen the mixer? Amongst other things it gives you access to the LINE and MICROPHONE input levels on record. Works very well. I would now like to be able to do the same with Vista but have no idea where or if there is a mixer of similar ilk in Vista. Hopefully you will know.

Thanks, Roscoe.
