603199 2007-10-20 01:24:00 A few months ago I bought a 320 gig drive and thought it would be a good idea to do a fresh install of XP. After the problem of drive size raised its ugly head I reformatted and partitioned the drive a 170 gig, a 117 gig and a 14.7 for the os, figuring this should be fine.

Anyhoo. after the install all was not well so I went back to the old drive and used that os.

Last week I thought I'd give it another go.

I swapped the drives in BIOS and booted up. the boot up stalled at the loading screen so I decided to format the 14.7 partition and reinstall
This screwed up the mbr and I could no longer access the other partitions.
Using Partition recovery from Active@ I recovered the partitions and tried again totally bolloxing up the drive again. With the help of Active@ excellent support I recovered the drive again.

So. I still want to install XP on this 14.7 partition but as you can assume I am a bit wary.

Could running the drive as slave be the problem? both are set as master on the jumpers (IDE drives on cable select and choosing boot order from BIOS)

I would have thought this should be simple.

Any Ideas out there?

603200 2007-10-20 01:27:00 A drive being slave is no problem if it is selected as primary booting device is hard disk group priority. Give it a try again, i think it will work this time. jessicaroy (12943)
603201 2007-10-20 01:28:00 Well dont put it on cable select.

And it might be better if you slipstream SP1 or 2, if neither have been slipstreamed yet.

603202 2007-10-20 01:37:00 Why do you say dont put it on cable select, surley that is better than using the jumper settings in this case?
Oh could you tell me how to do the slpstreaming of XP SP2, I have both disks
Thanks

Umm no, not necessarily.

Follow this if you want to slipstream SP2 (www.winsupersite.com)

Then you have to reburn the lot back to cd, and hopefully it boots.

603206 2007-10-20 03:03:00 So, are you saying I should set the jumpers on the hard drives as master and slave?
If I do that how can I switch between drives?

If your system has a boot menu, use it to select a hdd.

What else is on it besides XP??
