603075 2007-10-19 21:28:00 Hi All,

I'm running Vista Ultimate, and I have a persistant message pop up:
(see HERE (img86.imageshack.us))

Interactive services dialog detection.
A program can't display a message on your desktop.

> Show me the message
> Remind me in a few minutes

I click 'Show me the message' and the screen goes blank, then grey, then says 'when you have read the message, click here to return to your desktop'
Except, there is no message to read.

I go back to the desktop, and a few minutes later, up pops the same message.

There is a 'program details' tab, which tells me the problem is in C:\recycler\svchost.exe - which is incompatible with Vista.

Of course, there is nothing in C:\recycler - it's empty.

A bit of research has shown other people having this problem in relation to anti-virus software but I don't yet have any installed.

Any ideas?

It is, no errors or warnings.

603078 2007-10-19 22:18:00 Sounds a bit suspect that a "program" in the recycle bin is trying to run, and display a message. I'd actually hazard a guess that your PC is infected with something, and Vista is stopping it from running.

Run an antivirus/spyware scan and see if anything crops up. Also run a Hijackthis scan, and upload your log file to hijackthis.de to check.

Yup - svchost.exe was infected. AVG caught it, neutralised it, seems to have fixed the problem.

I thought svchost.exe was an integral part of the OS, that's why I didn't suspect a virus. Where it came from is anyone's guess.

I thought I didn't really need anti-virus on my shiny new super-secure Vista. You live and learn.

Thanks guys.

Good to hear you got it sorted. There are a number of viruses/spyware etc. which use the same filename as key Windows files to fool the user into thinking that it is fine.

Antivirus is always a must - even though in this case Vista stopped it from running, it doesn't remove it for you.

603081 2007-10-20 01:23:00 Rather having Antivirus is extremly necessary when you are using any version of microsoft software. jessicaroy (12943)
603082 2007-10-29 14:42:00 Hi, I'm having this same issue. The only difference is when I try to scan the folder with Trend Micro, Windows Defender and even Kapersky Online, they do not recognize the file as malware. Any suggestions?
