603337 2007-10-22 08:11:00 Asked friend for XP cd, he gave me his recovery disc, insisting that it was the XP cd (he still is now, even after everything ive told him that it isn't)

A recovery cd DOES have Windows on it. (its usually more than 1 CD - the laptop I fixed a few weeks ago, I had to burn 11 CD's to restore it). And drivers for a specific system.

Thats why its called a recovery CD. You use it in case something screws up.

It restores a system to its original state.

You usually create them (the cd's) with a system you buy (there maybe ISO's on the hdd that you have to burn to CD/DVD).

Just because its a recovery CD, it doesnt MEAN its going to work with EVERY computer on the planet.

If your system DIDN'T come with a partitiion or ISO's, for you to burn, then it WILL NEVER work.

No matter how hard you try

I also got an OEM Nero CD with it, too.

Unless the cd/dvd you've got, came with this OEM version of Nero, it may install, BUT wont work with your burner.

Nero wont detect your burner.

They dumped that restriction in version 6 - from version 6+ you can use an OEM copy of Nero with any burner.

Wardog - You will have a windows install CD rather than a recovery CD. the windows CD is designed to work with any computer, so you have to install drivers & applications after installing windows, whereas a recovery CD (or DVD) is customised for a particular computer & will install windows AND everything the computer needs.

Oops ok then my bad :D

Thank christ for that. Lucky I had SATA on this (As i had to connect the laptop SATA hdd to this system, to copy the ISO's) then burn them.

I didnt fancy getting the updates / and drivers for the laptop (when I was on dialup) after.

If I had to install another version of Windows on the laptop.

If someone collected all the parts from PB tech for you ,and then assembled its higly unlikely PB Tech would have made a recovery CD. If PB tech assembled a certain "Model" of their PC's then yes they may have made a recovery CD for that model.

Yea sorry. That's what I meant.

I just reformatted again, with MY recovery CD, and I got the same error when running the CD that came with my motherboard, and I got the same error when installing the audio drivers.

I think I'll get a pro to update my BIOS, I'm getting sick of this.

603345 2007-10-22 18:42:00 Wardog if you have the XP validateing codes and as you claim have lost your XP disk, why don't you ring up MS and explain to them your situation and they should send you another one at a small price. I think what you are trying to do by useing your mates recovery disks is pirateing or very nearly on the verge of it.
