| 605081 | 2007-10-25 03:03:00 | I'm trying to get a laptop talking to a phone system. It connects to it through a crossover network cable. The laptop can't ping the phone system, but if I plug the laptop into our network, it can get on the internet & ping our computers OK. All other computers I've tried with the phone system can ping it OK. I've ran a winsock fix & uninstalled & reinstalled the network drivers but still have this very strange problem. It had zone alarm, but that was uninstalled before it was brought to me. |

| 605082 | 2007-10-25 03:21:00 | update: It works if I plug them both into a switch, but not if I plug the laptop into the phone system directly. That is very strange | Greven (91) | ||
| 605083 | 2007-10-25 03:53:00 | Does the switch have a router with a DHCP server connected to it? Have you assigned an IP to the phone system and the laptop? If your using a crossover cable you will need to assign static IP's. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | ||

If your using a crossover cable you will need to assign static IP's. Both have static IPs assigned. It works if I don't change any settings, but replace the crossover with a patch cable & patch them both into a switch. |

| 605085 | 2007-10-27 00:07:00 | Try using a straight-through cable to the PABX, not a crossover. :D The other computers (and the switch) might have autodetect to enable use of either sort of cable, and the laptop might not. The PABX probably doesn't have autodetect. |

The PABX probably doesn't have autodetect. I've tried that too - it doesn't pick up the cable is plugged in when I use a straight through cable. The equipment has been returned to the customer now & he is happy enough to carry round a switch, but it is a strange problem & we are all curious to know why it can't connect directly. |

| 605087 | 2007-10-27 01:15:00 | Hey Greven I have come across some equipment in the field that is the same, they just won't work with a crossover cable connected directly to a computer. Had one last week with an X-ray machine at a dentist. I had to have it connected to a switch otherwise the PC would not connect to it. This thing wouldn't even let me change the IP address. |

That's just two pairs of wires. ;) Probably, the computer must have a fixed IP address in the same address range (in the same LAN). Probably, the computer must not be "insisting" on using duplex. (That is, using the simplest standard Ethernet mode.) Probably, it shouldn't be trying to negotiate a speed. (It should be fixed at the appropriate speed for the PABX.) Probably. :D |
