604993 2007-10-24 22:23:00 My daughter has moved back to the family home while she finds a new flat. She comes complete with her own router and three computers. Is it possible for her to set up her router on my broadband conection in parallel with mine on another phone outlet. My LAN has already got three computers connected to the router with only 4 sockets available. Both routers are the same. Netgear DG834. Need some solution. Thanks in advance.Ian i-gordon (962)
604994 2007-10-24 22:27:00 You should be able to use her router just as a basic switch. Get her to turn off the "router" functionality - i.e. ADSL settings etc, and just plug one of the Ethernet ports from her router into yours. This will mean that all the work is still done by your router, and hers is just acting as an "extender". somebody (208)
604995 2007-10-24 22:50:00 Sombody,Thanks for the suggestion, however it may be the last resort because it would mean running a RG45 cable about 12 metres to her room or moving her stuff into my space and I havent got enough now. There is already a phone connection in her room so my original idea would be the simplest if its possible.Ian i-gordon (962)
604996 2007-10-24 23:03:00 Ok. In that case, yes you can set it up like you propose, but you can only have one router going at a time. somebody (208)

It depends whether they both have the same ISP
Most ISPs are using Telecoms UBS plan and this means the phone line is ported to that particular ISP and even though ADSL is active on the line you can't login with another ISPs login username.

604998 2007-10-24 23:15:00 You can only have 1 ADSL modem on the 1 phone line at any one time.

This person Here (www.webmasterworld.com) has asked the same question.

If running a cat5 cable between the two routers and having your daughters one as a switch, as sombody suggested is not a choice, then the other way is to purchase two wireless access points and set them up as wireless. If its only temp, is there any reason you cant run a cable, tuck it down by the carpet/floor / wall and its out of the way.

604999 2007-10-24 23:49:00 Don't let her get too comfortable or she may never move out! Are 3 computers absolutely necessary for internet connection?

What we did with our daughter was allow her wireless access to our router for a couple of months - and banned video downloads. Her laptop had a wireless connection inbuilt but you can get external USB ones.

605000 2007-10-25 00:10:00 OK everyone.
I have the answer, I cant have 2 routers on 1 phone line.
I now have to think about the easiest or most practical way out. Probably the long cable down the hall.
Thanks for your replies.

I was assuming that Ian wanted to use his ADSL account on both routers. If so, then he could have two routers physically connected to the phone line, configured using his ISP details. Then he can just turn one on, and the other one off, or vice versa - i.e. only one can be on at any one time. I suspect though that this isn't really an option in this situation, as you'd want both sets of PCs to have access to the internet...

605002 2007-10-25 00:29:00 Also, as I discovered recently, the ADSL account is tied to the telephone line. (Which is why we couldn't get a friend's router working here when he brought it over for me to set up. The settings only worked on his phone line). Mercury (1316)
