604984 2007-10-24 21:56:00 ok, well I've spent the last 2 days trying to figure this problem out, now I need some help .

I have a number of Compaq nc4000 laptops all sitting on about 256mb ram(pc2100 and pc2700), we have just purchased a number of 512mb sticks all pc2700 . Now the problem begins, the bios system information is not recognizing the 512mb sticks of ram, no matter which slot they are in, they do pick up a 512mb stick of pc2100 just not the new 2700's . I have tried a bios flash on one laptop with no change, am I just out of luck or is there some way round this problem, I found numerous references on the net to people running pc3200 on the machines but ours just struggle with anything more than 256mb .

Any ideas/help would be much appreciated .

604985 2007-10-24 22:05:00 According to the Compaq site:

Standard 256-MB 266-MHz SDRAM DDR SDRAM (256-MB SODIMM in slot 1)

Maximum 1024-MB 266-MHz SDRAM DDR SDRAM (512-MB SODIMMs in slots 1 and 2)

NOTE: 256MB of DDR standard with 32MB of system memory shared as video memory .

NOTE: Shared video memory (UMA) uses part of the total system memory for video performance .

For example, if there is 256MB of system memory, 32MB will be shared with the video graphics sub-system . The system will have 224MB of available system memory for other computing activities .

NOTE: Due to the non-industry standard nature of some third-party memory modules, we recommend HP branded memory to ensure compatibility .

What's the version of Windows ?

604986 2007-10-24 22:13:00 They are all running Win XP, the part thats getting me at the moment is that the 256mb stick that is working in my one of these notebooks is DDR-333 and it works happily at that speed nexromancier (12961)
604987 2007-10-24 22:17:00 Compaq can be picky. What RAM does it have now that works? Specifically what brand are the actual chips? Hynix? Samsung? Try and match it.
Also are they single sided or double sided? Because generally you have to match that too.

I had that with a Compaq desktop once. I didn't use the same brand but I used Hynix chips and double sided which it accepted.

604988 2007-10-24 22:49:00 yeh it's more than likely the brand the machines dont like........compaq can be fussy drcspy (146)
604989 2007-10-25 00:24:00 hmmm this is starting to sound bad, ok well just pulled my one apart and the RAM that came with it was 256MB Hynix PC2700 doublesided(CPUZ id'd its manufacturer as Hyundai Electronics). The 512mb stick is Simpletech PC2100(CPUZ id'd manufacturer as Silicon Technology) doublesided.
The ram I have been trying is Kingston 512mb pc2700 Doublesided also

604990 2007-10-25 00:33:00 RAM that came with it was 256MB Hynix PC2700 doublesided. The 512mb stick is Simpletech PC2100
The ram I have been trying is Kingston 512mb pc2700 Doublesided also

Match the chips - never mind the brand. And match the type. If it has 2100 then use 2100. If 2700, then use 2700. Don't mix them.

604991 2007-10-25 00:42:00 I've tried that also, I was hoping for some kind of workaround as we have just picked up 10 sticks of this stuff and at the moment it looks like it just wont work. Anytime that I try to run with even just 1 of the new PC2700 Kingston 512mb chips the system wont post, it acts as though there is no RAM there. nexromancier (12961)
604992 2007-10-25 19:27:00 Ok, well unless any of you have any ideas I'm be off to let the people that pay for things here know we bought useless ram, any other suggestions would still be much appreciated but if you are all out of ideas then I guess that is it. nexromancier (12961)
