604894 2007-10-24 10:15:00 I built my GAMING computer about two years ago, and I remember using Thermal paste with my Amd 3500+.

Am I supposed to reapply the paste? If so how often and which brand do you recommend since I don't have the thermal paste with me anymore.

Thank you.

604895 2007-10-24 10:23:00 I wouldnt worry about it, if it isnt freezing or anything. Or overheating. Speedy Gonzales (78)
604896 2007-10-24 10:29:00 If you have never pulled teh fan off since then, then there is no reason to go near it.

If you do remove the fan then clean both surfaces with ISO and reapply paste.

604897 2007-10-24 11:18:00 Arctic Silver 5 is one of the best as well as MX-1 or 2. Ascent.co.nz has AS5 for $16 including shipping :D trinsic (6945)
604898 2007-10-24 19:19:00 The standard stuff you get from DSE will be plenty good enough.

But as mentioned, if you're not experiencing overheating on the CPU then leave it alone.

But... if you do go and clean the chip and heatsink surfaces and reapply the paste, remember only to use the lightest smear.

604899 2007-10-25 05:15:00 If you're going to reapply thermal paste I can recommend the Arctic Silver too.

Also, I sprang for their cleaning solutions (1 & 2) last time I bought AS5 - and haven't regretted it - if only for the nice smell.

But I agree with Speedy, Greg and Metla - if it works, don't fix it....

Dans Data(?) did a comparative test of heatsink compounds a while back.
They all work just the same, no real benefit with the expensive stuff. He even
tried yogurt(from memory) & that worked OK
