604860 2007-10-24 07:16:00 Heya guys...

I'm trying to fix my mums computer here, but when I plug my monitor into it, it wont display anything, when I turn PC on it shows windows xp home and the loading bar, then after the bar goes through 5-6 turns the monitor turns off.....
I know monitor works as I'm using it with my computer right now...its just a normal basic CRT monitor, similar to what mum uses just smaller resolution.

Is there anything I can do to get the monitor working, as theres no way possible for me to get hers, she sent comp up via courier so I can fix it compared to the $600+ quoted by shop...courier was only $15 for it to be sent.

I thought I could remove hdd and put into mine but wont go to that if theres a simple way of fixing monitor...

Plz help:)

Both comps run xp home...

604861 2007-10-24 07:18:00 Will it boot into safe mode without turning off?

Check the videocard and see if its in properly.

604862 2007-10-24 07:24:00 If you can get into the BIOS than try loading the default settings... not sure if this will help but worth a try...

Had a similar issue at work, the user's resolution was set too high for the screen and it kept turning the screen off after the loading bars shows up. So i hooked it up to a bigger screen and it loaded up fine and I just changed the resolution back to 1024 X 768 and it worked fine after that. Don't know this could be your problem but give it a go.

604863 2007-10-24 07:44:00 i'll take it into work tommorrow and change resolution to something suitable and try that before going into Bios etc as I dont know much about that side of things, comp just needs a reformat and reinstallation of certian things and more ram then it'd be right as rain...
will let you know tommorrow how it went..

604864 2007-10-24 07:47:00 uh...before you take it into work, Just fire it up in safe mode and see if she gets to desktop.

Then msconfig>startup>disable everything (including security software) and reboot.

Well.
One reason the shop may charge more is they know that putting her HDD into your PC and booting up would cause Windows to have a complete spaz and blue screen. Because you have completely different hardware to hers - especially the motherboard.

They would also know to do such things as booting into safe mode first and altering whatever the peoblem is.
Like resolution as has been said.

604866 2007-10-24 22:03:00 Try looking at the refresh rate - if the refresh is set too high it will cause exactly this problem, as the monitor won't be able to keep up with the signal that the PC is sending without risking damage - so it blanks.

Boot in VGA mode. Safe mode if you can't find VGA mode. Either of these will boot in 640x480@60Hz, so if you still can't see anything the problem is something else.
Set the res to 1024*768 and the refresh to 60Hz - unless the monitor is over 15 years old it should be able to handle this setting.
Reboot if you were using safe mode. VGA mode should be fine without the reboot.
Now slowly bump up the res until you reach the one you want (if 1024*768 isn't high enough for you). If the monitor goes blank wait 15 seconds for the picture to come back and stop at the existing resolution.
Start cranking up the refresh rate - most monitors should be able to handle at least 75Hz at 1024*768; any made in the last few years should be able to handle at least 85Hz. If the screen goes blank, just wait 15 seconds and the pic will come back - stop adjusting at this point.

604868 2007-10-25 04:27:00 csinclair...I know how you feel. I have also offered help to someone else, (but NOT with computers!!), & come unstuck when the problem is out of my knowledge base. Someone usually comes to my rescue, although after ribald comments. PJ  Poppa John (284)
