2007-10-24 04:10:00 | Ive been given a Compaq Presario 2500 Notebook. :) Yes it was faulty, but only had a shot HDD and needed an extra 256 of Ram. Anyway, its up and running beauty but I have a little query. It doesnt have a Line-in Jack. Yes it has a green Headphone jack which I guess is near enough to Line Out & it has a pink Microphone jack but thats it. Now I think Ive read somewhere that these days the input level and impedance are not a critical as they once were. However I wonder if anyone can confirm this as Id hate to connect an amplifiers headset jack to the Mic jack and blow the darn thing up. All advice appreciated. I cant find anything Googling but then I might be searching on the wrong words.

2007-10-24 04:24:00 | Conexant AMC Audio is the only input Joe but I cant find mention of Line-in anywhere. The Mic & Line-In inputs used to be high and Low impedance and you could do a mischief by connecting Line-in to the Mic-jack.

2007-10-24 04:30:00 | Let me look around a little...do you haver an audio icon in the clock area to right click and see anything? | SurferJoe46 (51) | |
2007-10-24 04:34:00 | found the drivers and manual for Linux-based systems..still checking 4 u | SurferJoe46 (51) | |
2007-10-24 04:35:00 | try this: www.conexant.com I'm still on it

2007-10-24 04:42:00 | I keep on running into problems with the drivers for this laptop...obviously Compaq doesn't offer much after a certain time support. That's not surprising to me...I got rid of everything I had with the big C on it...but I think you have onboard sounds. Is the modem showing in Control panel? You MAY need to get the owner's manual to know if you can toggle the input to various values...don't try this without asking a lot of questions first....

2007-10-24 05:52:00 | Starting at the top Joe. Yep, have audio icon but Speaker Volume only. Yep, have Conexant 56k ACLink Modem. I dont think I need any drivers as I have the Driver Disk that come with the Computer. My concern is physically frying the Mic Input Circuitry.

First, though, inserting LINE into MIC will not fry anything but the resulting quality may not be what you expect. What you really need is an attenuator which, as the word suggests, changes (attenuates) the signal to make it acceptable to the MIC input. I do not know where you may buy one but I am certain that any repair shop should understand the terminology and could perhaps make or sell you one. If you run an OS up to XP it has what they incorrectly call a mixer. There you can change the record and playback levels (but not mix.) In Vista look in HARDWARE AND SOUND and then MANAGE AUDIO DEVICES where you will be able to set the recording level. Hope that helps. Roscoe. |

2007-10-24 20:17:00 | Thanks Roscoe. Yes I know what your talking about as in another life I used to make matching pads and fit attenuators and there ilk as part of my job. However, in those days I knew the output impedance, the input impedance, and how many dbm I was expected to reduce the level. In this case I d only be guessing at all of them which is why I had hoped somebody might be able to get a little closer. Anyway, what I think I shall do is start up Goldwave then connect things up with the volume right down and then gradually increase the volume whilst watching the spectrum on Goldwave. My ears have never been able to pick up distortion caused by impedance mismatch so Im not expecting that to be an issue. :D
