604662 2007-10-23 22:09:00 I have a 1 year old Athlon 4000 computer which will take an ethernet connection but my 7 year old Pentium 3 600 mhz computer has no ethernet socket (and no spare slot) so I thought I could connect a 4 port modem router by ethernet cable to the Athlon and a USB cable to the Pentium.
Does this make sense or is there other options so that I can use both computers on broadband?
The modem routers I've checked on the net are
Dlink USBDSL-200 External ADSL Modem with Firewall V2.5
Linksys AM300 ADSL Modem
Has anyone any experience of either of these?
Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

604663 2007-10-23 22:36:00 Dont use USB to connect the modem / router. To the back of the case.

Its not reliable.

Get one with ethernet ports.

Or get a wireless modem/router, and get a wireless USB adapter (if the other PC has USB 2 ports).

Since the other PC doesnt have any spare slots.

604664 2007-10-23 22:41:00 Just a thought - If the PC that has no spare slots has a dial up modem in it, that can be taken out and replaced by an Ethernet card, or is there anything else that can be removed thats no longer required ? wainuitech (129)
604665 2007-10-23 22:46:00 It is worth trying USB rather than spending money on new cards or wireless routers.
There are many people using USB connected routers without any great problems.

I agree. I have connected many PCs to the network and internet temporarily here with USB with no problems at all. Ethernet is preferable but when it is not available USB is fine.

If I get a 4 port ADSL modem Router can I attach a suitable cable to one port and attach directly to USB 1.1 socket on the pc? I'd use another port for the ethernet connection to the newer computer. For USB broadband connection do you need a special driver or does it work by just connectibg up?

604669 2007-10-25 21:14:00 You can get USB adapters that allow you to use a USB port as an ethernet socket but it would be cheaper and would run faster with an ethernet card.
You can pick them up for less than $20.

That depends - the Router normally comes with software as required.

my 7 year old Pentium 3 600 mhz computer has no ethernet socket What is the OS on this PC ? XP , 98, 2000 - Other?

Personally the Ethernet is more reliable - In my business I have seen may problems with USB - changed to Ethernet and it worked OK.

As I mentioned above Post #3. ??
