Umm...err... not 100% sure. When you plug it in does it give you a warning "this drive would perform better on a Hi-speed usb port"?

Alternatively, do you get similar slowness when using a different PC?

605102 2007-10-25 05:50:00 Hi

they say a picture (nigel.geek.nz)is worth a thousand words, unfortunately I couldn't come up with a thousand expletives

I'm pretty sure this isn't right, i gave up after waiting 10mins, and copied the info to my second harddrive that only took a minute or so

This is going to be a real problem so if anyone has any useful suggestions i would appreciate it

edit-------
for some reason I'm getting a 403 error on the image, if you get a 403 error just press refresh

Your right, that is pretty craptacular.

605103 2007-10-25 05:50:00 mmm my speed on such things depends on google desktop running or indexing... if so turn them off (uninstall actually) as they really slow down IO IMHO.
Since removing google desktop etc I am back to normal vista performance...
I wonder if vista indexing causes similar issues...?

605104 2007-10-25 05:51:00 I'll check the actual drive once it finishes transferring as i need to back this stuff up temporarily

edit

Ok i have no idea how to tell the speed of the usb key

605105 2007-10-25 06:21:00 and i am back again

it took a full 30 minutes to copy a directory (439 MB), from my harddrive to my usb key, but when i copied the directory from my usb key to my desktop it took 2 and a half minutes, and yes i removed the usb key between transfers etc to make sure it wasn't cacheing stuff

605106 2007-10-25 08:30:00 Are you sure that a portion of the USB Key isn't set to work with ReadyBoost? Because that would have a massive impact on your read/write speeds. beeswax34 (63)

Readyboost isn't relevant here. There are plenty of USB Flash drives which aren't Readyboost compatible, but are still USB2.0 and able to transfer files at a reasonable rate.

Nigel: When you say "then i copied the directory from my usb key to my desktop it took 2 and a half minutes", was that on the same computer which was copying from hard drive to usb drive very slowly?

605108 2007-10-25 19:11:00 Its a known issue. There is a patch out, or as mentioned SP1
I cant remember the patch details, but a quick google found this:
