604690 2007-10-24 04:25:00 He doesn't know what a computer does S,so it will be a learning curve.

Read some of the other posts on here bout Vista on laptops, he'll get the drift :D

There maybe wireless PCMCIA cards whatever theyre called, BUT I would say theyre pretty expensive, and getting on an ISP would be even more expensive.

I would just connect a modem/router using ethernet if he's planning on getting on broadband.

604691 2007-10-24 04:33:00 Just about any Asus from DSE will suit him, Ensure it he has it upgraded to 2GB though or it will drag its arse. Even the cheaies are loaded with deatures.

And remove Nortons and the "trial" of office on first boot.

604692 2007-10-24 04:42:00 So a Asus laptop with 2 gig ram

Nod32

Speedy,he wants to operate unit in kitchen etc,so wireless seem the way to go,if a little expensive. Is one wirless modem better than another?

Are we talking 1500 all up?

This chap has never turned a computer on.

604693 2007-10-24 04:52:00 If you mean wireless like Woosh, he'll have to get something like one of these (search.dse.co.nz 709&site=&w=woosh+modem&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=Go)

If he's got a phone line in the kitchen, and he'll be using it, then there's no point in getting anything wireless. As theres only one computer.

604694 2007-10-24 04:53:00 Mate about to buy his first computer.

He wants a laptop as he doesn't have a handy dedicated area to operate.

What do I advise him to get,I have ideas, but you folks are better able to advise than me.

1. laptop........make?

2 wireless modem...what one etc

3.Cordless mouse..thats me........

Just to say he is not sure what a computer is, so nothing fancy.

OK. Who is Mate? Is this a flatmate? Do you and he occupy the same living space for example? Will he connect the laptop via Ethernet to your computer?

Why I ask is because of the wireless modem. Where you live comes into it as well. This due to lack of an ISP over wireless in some areas in NZ.

More info needed for me to answer the question.

Go to the DSE site and look at teh Asus F5R range, they start at $1100, I got one for my brother, Barely ran, We bumped the ram up to 1.5 GB and she was beautiful.

Nice screen, Loaded with goodies, quality at an excellent price.

Though I would suggest any additional ram is sourced elsewhere, You can get it for a quarter of what DSE charged.

604696 2007-10-24 05:04:00 I still don;t get the whole wireless modem thing. I have Woosh Wireless but that gets plugged into my Linksys so I can have a wireless signal in the whole house. I can also plug the modem straight through USB or using my gateway, through Ethernet.

If he wants to use it in the kitchen, it wont matter which ISP he has as long as he has a wireless routers AND a adapter for the laptop which could be an onboard one or a USB/PCMCIA type. About $50 for either one.

604697 2007-10-24 05:09:00 Well it depends on WHAT kind of wireless we're talking about .

Saying wireless doesnt tell us anything .

Does this guy want wireless INTERNET, or want to be part of a wireless NETWORK . Or what .

Theyre 2 totally different things .

If he wants wireless internet well get something like what I posted before .

If on the other hand he's talking about a wireless network . Whats the point in getting a wireless modem/router . If there's noone else there .

604699 2007-10-24 05:34:00 I'm not sure everyone on this forum would say that. :yuck:

That's the point - I'm sharing my experiences, not yours. As far as I'm concerned, I'm happy with Dell.
