604508 2007-10-23 22:12:00 The case is not so important.

Well it can be if you intend to put an 8800GTX or 8800Ultra in it.
Because they are long.................

And while the case is just a matter of looks and size in the case of high end graphics cards - the power supply is important.

604509 2007-11-20 03:04:00 I thought this project looked like a bit of fun as well and had the same question ... If I follow the project how much will it cost to get to a running 'Beast'?

I understand (according to the article) that once the 'Beast' is running the intention is to continue to upgrade it with the latest and greatest so it is a never ending project with an ever expanding budget (cool toys!!)

With a start of $370 for the case and $350 for the PSU I am waiting to see what motherboard is recommended. I am picking not much change out of $500. Another $600 for the CPU and ram ... so we are at $2k without a cooling system, DVD or HD. Add $300, $70 and $150. I think 3k is probably a safe bet depending on monitor.

I got excited by this project so I bought a cheap (roomy) case with a PSU ($90), a cheap motherboard ($150), robbed a P4 CPU, 256 ram, 10g HD and CD player from an old PC and had a go in the knowledge it did not matter if I screwed it. With a bit of research and patience I now have a running PC which I am upgrading bit by bit. e.g. now has a 200g HD, 1.5g ram, DVD.

I have learnt alot already and am now ready to tackle 'The Beast'!

Why?

For the hell of it!

604510 2007-11-20 03:32:00 The beast will be an ongoing process, and it'll have some nice specs :)

but, it won't be absolute zomgwtfbbq top of the line stuff, don't think we'll venture into watercooling and quad 8800XXX cards or anything like that. Should be mostly manageable.

The next thing you might want to do is replace that PSU with a decent one before it goes boom (or poof - for those less pc  )

604512 2007-11-20 19:53:00 The Beast is only a "beast" for 5 minutes too - until the next gen hardware comes out.

Its why I no longer bother replacing my entire PC anymore - I just upgrade bits at a time.

The most is when I change MBs - CPU, MB and RAM usually have to be changed in one go.
