2007-10-24 23:09:00 | I have recently bought a new PC, which I have set up in my room have now have connected to the internet via wireless network from my Dads Sky connection. I have no problem viewing any website etc.. However I just tried to install DC++ (p2p program) and I cannot seem to download anything (before anyone says anything - its demo trading, perfectly legal). I can connect to the hub but it won't actually let me download with the error "Connection Timeout". I have tried disabling all the firewalls but the problem does not seem to be fixed, I have also tried passive mode but with no avail. Does anyone know what the problem is - I advise small words because as far as computers go - I am a moron :D . Cheers Ash

Cheers Ash Welcome to PressF1Varg ; you may need to open ports in the router to allow certain connections related to the program you are using. I advise small words because as far as computers go - I am a moron :D . No Not a moron - simply asking a question that you don't know the answer to - nothing wrong with that. Have a lookHere at the site (www.dslreports.com) it tells you what settings you need. I was going to be cheeky and use smaller font - but don't think you can:lol: |

2007-10-24 23:25:00 | Welcome to PressF1. Which ISP are you with? As far as I'm aware, Sky NZ doesn't offer an internet service. Are you located in NZ, or another country?

2007-10-24 23:27:00 | haha it appears that I am not just a computer moron - I didn't even notice this was a NZ site. I am from England where Sky is currently an ISP. So how do I do this open port router thingy then?

2007-10-24 23:31:00 | I'm pretty sure that Sky UK does at least some blocking of P2P traffic, you may actually need to change the ports you're trying to use, as well as opening ports through your router. Before we go any further - is your connection routed or bridged (i.e. does your PC get a public IP address or a private one)? Are you using ADSL or some variation of cable? How is your computer physically connected to the service? Don't worry if you don't know how to find all that out - if you have problems, just ask.

2007-10-24 23:32:00 | No idea on the IP address, I believe it is ADSL and it is connected via the phone line. | Varg (12962) | |
2007-10-24 23:35:00 | OK, then your connection is probably routed. Is your computer connected to the ADSL router via USB, ethernet or wireless? Do you know the make/model of your ADSL router? You will also need to know the password for configuring it. Do you need to click anything to 'activate' your internet connection, or is it 'just there'?

2007-10-24 23:37:00 | Its a Belkin Wireless Adaptor I use to connect with, and my internet connection starts automatically when I start up the computer. | Varg (12962) | |
2007-10-24 23:42:00 | OK. Please do the following: Click 'Start', then 'Run'. Type 'cmd' in the box and click OK. Type 'ipconfig' in the black box that appears and press enter. Post the information for 'gateway' and 'ip address' back here. Do you have the admin username / password for your router? You will need it.

2007-10-24 23:42:00 | Its a Belkin Wireless Adaptor I use to connect with, and my internet connection starts automatically when I start up the computer. Please supply the Model Number of the router, that way exact instructions can be given. It will make it easier for Bletch.
