605736 2007-10-27 02:17:00 My digital still camera produces small videos, with audio, in .MOV format. These show in Windows explorer as Quick Time programs. They played in Quick Time 7.0.3.50 by double clicking on the filename.

I upgraded (free) Quick Time from 7.0.3.50 to 7.2.0.245; now the .MOV files won't play, nor will they play in iTunes 7.4.3.1. Actually, the audio plays fine but the video just shows as moving blocks of fuzzy colour.

The .MOV files I have are from 2 cameras, Kodak and Konica, so the camera would not seem to be the source of the problem.

The same .MOV files play fine in video editing programs like Corel/Ulead VideoStudio 11 and DVD MovieFactory 6.

I can't find anything in Apple's FAQs.

Has anyone else wxperienced this problem.

605737 2007-10-27 02:40:00 Not so far although I'm on an iMac.
Sounds like Apple has done something to QT and iTunes.

605738 2007-10-27 02:45:00 Are there any other programs installed set to play mov files by default? Speedy Gonzales (78)
605739 2007-10-27 03:11:00 Not that I've found. James Kirk (3742)
605740 2007-10-27 03:14:00 I would uninstall all versions of QT (if there's more than 1 entry in add/remove programs). Then reinstall it.

Or if you use Itunes as well uninstall all the programs for that too (Itunes, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple SW update, QT).

Then reinstall itunes. Then install the QT patch.

605741 2007-10-27 07:46:00 Or just get VLC Player. beeswax34 (63)
605742 2007-10-29 20:27:00 Thanks. I uninstalled everything associated with Quick Time and iTunes, then downloaded anew: unfortunately no improvement. James Kirk (3742)
605743 2007-10-30 20:05:00 Did your cameras come with any drivers/codecs? If so, they may need to be reinstalled. autechre (266)
605744 2007-10-30 20:16:00 Not sure if this is helpful, but I am using QuickTime 7.2 and iTunes 7.4.3.1/WinXP Pro.

I just checked my .mov files created on digital cameras. .mov files that I created in 2003 on an Olympus C5050 camera still work in both programmes, as do .mov files created by a friend using another Olympus camera (model unknown, but one of the mju cameras) in 2005.

So it is perhaps reasonable to conclude that your problem is not with either QT or iTunes.

605745 2007-11-01 21:03:00 I'm not so sure. QT and iTunes played .mov files fine until I updated to the latest versions: QT 7.2.0.245, and iTunes 7.4.3.1. I did this because Secunia Software Inspector told me that the versions I had were insecure.

However, I solved the problem by googling ".MOV" then downloading and installing "QuickTime Alternative" from www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Aleternative.htm. The download asked me to uninstall QickTime.
