605687 2007-10-26 23:58:00 Hi Guys

Can you please clarify for me how I would go about updating the BIOS of the an old computer I just received.

Its currently running Xubuntu with a MSI motherboard model "MS-6378".

Thanks

605688 2007-10-27 00:03:00 Search for the mobo on the MSI site, download the BIOS update.

Copy it to a floppy (a bootable/system floppy).

Change the bootdisk to the floppy in the BIOS.

Then boot from the floppy. Follow what it says on the site, on how to flash it.

Then once its updated, set the BIOS to its default settings and reconfigure it.

Change the bootdisk, back to the hdd. Save the settings. Thats it.

605689 2007-10-27 00:04:00 Have you been to the MSI website? Generally on the page where they have the BIOS files to download they also have a guide on how to flash the BIOS ;) Pete O'Neil (6584)
605690 2007-10-27 00:17:00 There is a easy way to do it. That is use the MSI's live update and follow the instruction. I'm using the MSI live update myself and I found this is the easiest way to flash your BIOS. aklthomas (12936)
605691 2007-10-27 00:19:00 I have been to their website and all the stuff I originally found referred purely to windows. Have since found a thing which says how to do so with a non-fat file system.

One of the points in there is this:

5.Boot the computer using a windows ME or windows 98 startup disk. It must be one of these! A plain boot disk will not be good enough.
If you do not have Windows ME or 98 to create the floppy you can make one on a friend's computer.

I don't have one is there any easy way to make one or some other way round it?

605692 2007-10-27 00:20:00 Can't use live update as not using windows as said in original post. stormdragon (6013)
605693 2007-10-27 00:29:00 Get one from here (http://www.bootdisk.com/)

Unzip whatever file and put the files (from whatever file from this site and the BIOS update file) on the floppy.
