have my modem which runs into a router which services a wired pc and 2 laptops via the wireless. when using the pc, i find it annoying when im surfing/downloading and the lappy users are muddling my speeds. is it possible to channel the bandwidth so the lappys only interfere with each others bandwidth and not mine? eg out of my usual 4mbit bandwidth. i want 3mbit and the lappys share the other 1 mbit. no downloading is done on the laptops, theyre just used to surf pretty much. i know it can be done at the pc end, but want to to know if it can be split at the router.

cheers

605985 2007-10-28 05:49:00 Look in your router settings something to do with QOS?

You should be able to set your i.p to get %80 of the bandwidth.

605986 2007-10-28 06:35:00 What make/model router do you have?

As apsattv said, some routers let you assign priorities to specific IPs. For instance, the DD-WRT 3rd party firmware would let you prioritise your traffic using QoS. Be aware that not all routers are able to do this though.

605988 2007-10-28 10:00:00 A Program called BWMETER might be able to do it? check it out.

Might be easier to workout.

605989 2007-10-28 10:17:00 Can I ask why? Do they all constantly download?
Realistically if you're surfing etc, then you shouldnt need it, your line speed will be plenty fast for it..

That and if they're all using it at once, you wont get the theoretical 8mbps simply due to distance from the exchange etc.

What are the users doing that's maxing out your connection?

605990 2007-10-28 10:43:00 the lappy users are usually on youtube and it does seem to dig into my download bandwidth and also when im surfing you tube as well. so i want first priority lol guess im wanting to create 2 distinct channels of bandwidth. from one of the replies, it can only be done with 3rd party software? 605991 2007-10-29 01:25:00 Or you could get a cheap router than has QOS options in it, like a Linksys or any brand really. Then you could tweak as much as you like. beeswax34 (63)
605992 2007-10-29 01:39:00 Check out the DD-WRT website they list all the models that will run their customer firmware. If my memory serves me right theres a particular ASUS model that can be found pretty cheap and is the perfect candidate for the modified firmware. Pete O'Neil (6584)
