605896 2007-10-27 17:52:00 Hi All

I have installed Feisty and am having problems with my Win Modem not completing the telephone connection to my ISP.

1. I downloaded the correct driver for my Intel 536EP.
2, I compiled the driver.
3. I installed the driver
4. I set up the modem and edited the wvdial.config file as instructed.

Now when I type "wvdial" in a terminal window, the modem dials the correct number and connects to my ISP but the text appearing in the terminal window includes the following:

Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
Starting pppd at (Today's Date and time)
Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied
PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) may be flaky.
Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/chap-secrets: Permission denied
CHAP (Challenge Handshake) may be flaky
Pid of pppd: 5631
Using interface ppp0

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

605897 2007-10-27 18:04:00 This is the only thing stopping my trying Feisty..it has a lot of documentation that this is a really big problem that needs an update or overnight correction somewhere.

I am watching this thread carefully for an answer before I try Feisty.

I have nothing else to offer...hopefully someone does.

605898 2007-10-27 18:07:00 Try starting wvdial with:

$sudo wvdial

If this works correctly, then some user permissions can be tweaked in the sudoer file.

605899 2007-10-27 18:43:00 Is that IT?

Is this the whole answer?

Makes me wonder why there's so much hubbub on other sites about this not working.....

605900 2007-10-27 18:56:00 Thanks Jen

I am responding using Firefox under Feisty. It worked fine but it is slower to load pages than under XP. I guess I will still need to tweak it.

Thanks again
Bruce

605901 2007-10-27 19:43:00 Is this Ubuntu or Kubuntu or what?

I dropped in a Kubuntu live CD and web pages load almost instantly compared to XPs few seconds...

605902 2007-10-28 00:10:00 It was Ubuntu not Kubuntu Bruce.Mitchell (10359)
605903 2007-10-28 00:38:00 Try 7.10. Might work better.

I had the same prob with 7.04. Altho after reading a ubuntu post on how to install / configure the modem. I got the modem working, but it would only dial out thru the terminal.

Not thru the other 2 programs. Cant remember the name of them now.

I might try 7.10, see if its any better.
