605797 2007-10-27 07:00:00 Ok, last night I decided I'd try iTunes seeing as my friends all testify about how good it is. I used to just use WMP because I liked the look of the newest one (the Vista style one) and because I found it worked to my liking. I also like the ability to make it into a mini player which runs next to the taskbar.

I've had a range of problems with it, through from ZoneAlarm connection pop-ups being blank, through to changing settings with out asking me.

I've managed to fix ones like the blank ZoneAlarm pop-ups (updated to the latest version). But there is one I can't fix.

My keyboard, a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, has a "play/pause" track button on it. This button used to start and pause tracks in WMP, but now it only works in iTunes. This happened without any input from me, and the keyboard software has no ability to select which media player/players the button controls.

Does anyone know how to help me on this? I'm presuming there will be something I have to edit somewhere.

Thanks.

605799 2007-10-27 11:47:00 I've managed to get it working, but only when iTunes is closed.

Seeing as I only use iTunes to get podcasts then this shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Beeswax, I agree with you, it's not as great as everyone says it is.

605800 2007-10-27 12:53:00 Yes iTunes is very invasive on XP as well, I don't like it.

Besides OS 9.2, that's two other Apple products I am very unimpressed with.

The others being Safari for Windows and after an unfortunate experience on a friend's computer, iTunes.

605801 2007-10-27 15:51:00 Make WMP the default player.

It sounds like you forgot to untick all the options when you installed Itunes.

To make it the default program for everything.

If you've only installed Itunes for Podcasts, use Winamp instead. (Thats if you dont use Itunes for Syncing contacts or calendars).

This supports Ipods, and Podcasts by default now.

If you decide to install Winamp untick Remote when you install it (unless you want to dl 14mb) off the net.

605802 2007-10-27 20:46:00 iTunes re-establishes itself as the default player for mp3's even if you change the associations back to WMP, it does this after a few restarts.

In the end we un-installed the rogue iTunes program.

Never had that problem  I've got WMP, Winamp, Itunes, VLC and a few others. All I have simply done is right clicked the Song - mp3, "Open With" Then Set the Player I want as default.Media Player Settings (www.imagef1.net.nz) Sometimes selecting it in the actual Players setting doesn't always appear to work - maybe I'm lucky:D

605805 2007-10-27 21:45:00 Same here.

I've got WMP11 (Even tho I dont use it), Winamp, Itunes, and Jetaudio.

And none of these are the default programs for anything.

Altho I usually run the program first, before I play whatever.

If there was something free to sync contacts and the calendar (besides Itunes, altho I could use Winamp for the songs/covers/videos), I would use it instead.

They've been "working together" since MS Office and IE for Mac in 1998 followed by iTunes on Windows and then Safari on Windows followed by Windows on a Mac :D
