605405 2007-10-25 21:17:00 Hi all,

I am about to purchase a new computer. This PC will not be used for games very much (only Windows games when I get bored ;) ) and am wondering which graphics card to get with it. All i want it to do is to display Vista's Aero graphics properly!

The Nvidia 8300GS with 128MB memory seems to be the best deal - entry level - yes, but that's all I need. Looking at the minumum graphics card requirements for Vista Ultimate (the version I want), 128MB is the minimum. I want to be able to upgrade to Windows "7" when it coes out, too. Will 128 be enought to run it or should I go for 256?

So basically I want to know if the 8300GS will be sufficient to run Vista and 7 well.

All help much appreciated.

Graphics cards are for gaming.

605407 2007-10-26 00:49:00 You'd need to get a motherboard with pretty decent onboard graphics to run aero well, I have been using Gigabyte boards with an Nvidia "6100" onboard recently. They run aero well. Make sure you have at least 2 gig of RAM though, as the onboard will want 256MB of RAM allocated to it to run acceptably. wratterus (105)

The graphics card is not onboard and is connected through a PCIe slot.

The Intel & VIA ones don't quite cut it though.

605411 2007-10-27 07:32:00 Cards like the nVidia 6200tc should do the job to. For example the 6200 has 64mb on the card and then uses another 192 system ram to make (a rather slow) 256mb card.

I've been using one for gaming until recentally, it performs similarly to the ATI 9600pro 128mb, a card from around 2004.

605412 2007-10-27 08:48:00 The Intel & VIA ones don't quite cut it though.I'd disagree with you there, unless aero needs more horsepower than UT2004 at 1280*1024 with every setting on max - my intel onboard is quite happy with that and produces a rather good framerate. No idea about the VIA ones though. Erayd (23)
