2016-05-04 07:00:00 | Hi peeps, Which is the better one to install on a Windows 8.1 OS to make it look and feel more like Windows 7/Vista? Start 8 or Classic shell? Also, once installed, how does it affect the nag icon for upgrade/downgrade to Win 10? I am wishing to onsell a second hand Windows 8.1 laptop to my sister. She currently has Vista  LL

2016-05-04 08:28:00 | Both work, but Start 8 is NOT free ( 30 day trial) where classic shell is free. Installing WONT turn off the upgrade options for W10. In case your interested the latest build of W10 14332 ( public build is 10586 - see its way behind and lots of small changes are coming real soon) the start menu has changed again, more like W7 now, of course like always you can remove the tiles on the right if you like. In fact its actually BETTER than W7. My 1 and only W7 left which is being replaced very shortly seems so god damn backward and slow getting to settings now.

2016-05-04 10:33:00 | Ok, so if I install Classic Shell can I just use the GWX Control Panel to remove the upgrade files for Win 10 as per normal? I have done this very successfully on two or three computers for older people who do not want Windows 10. They are very happy so far. Cheers, LL

2016-05-04 10:45:00 | You should be able to. Never used the GWX Control Panel. I know of it of course, but most people who have reverted backto what ever old system they had before simply don't let W10 install. Its quite funny, had several people in my workshop at various times, and while waiting they have been on one of the workshop PC's and were quite surprised it was W10, had LOTS more easy to use features, not like W7. One guy about two months ago, actually wanted me to then upgrade to W10 after I had finished fixing his W7, he liked the way I had it setup, asked if I could do the same to his and asked why so many people think its bad.

2016-05-04 11:21:00 | Hi WT, yes I do appreciate your comments about changing to Windows 10, but my sister is almost 80 and just can't deal with any changes much she said. So it would be much easier for her to cope if things were a little more familiar. Hopefully I will be able to set this up that way for her. Cheers, LL

2016-05-04 21:56:00 | 8/8.1 is no more like Vista than 10 is, less actually. Classic shell and start8 (or is that start10?) are both available for windows 10 as well I'm fairly sure. Anyway don't let us push you into it if you want to stick with 8.1, just consider the risk that your sister will accidentally upgrade to 10 and be lost in the process. I don't use classic shell myself and I think anyone is better off in the long run learning to use the default menu but I have installed it and set it up for a couple of friends that couldn't deal with widows 8. It's actually a pretty close match to the standard windows 7 menu and has quite a few options. Myself I set it up so I had 2 start buttons, one for classic shell and one for windows default menu. That way they can learn the new while still having access to the old :) I know there's a lot of hate for the modern tile based menu's, but if you take the time to customise it and set it up with just the programs you use it can be very convenient. I group all my games together, all my utilities, and all my productivity apps. So I have 3 small groups of tiles.

2016-05-04 22:10:00 | Yup I'm using Start10 on 2 of these. And using the Win7 style setting. I did buy Start 8, when I was using Win8 Does a pretty good job. And they're not that expensive to buy. And if you paid for Start8, you'll get a discount for Start 10 This is what it looks like. You can't use Start8 on Win10 though. You have to use Start10

2016-05-04 22:48:00 | Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated! I have set the Windows updates to notify when available, and choose which to download and install. So far, there has been no Get Windows 10 icon appear on the task bar, or in the hidden items. We can cross that bridge when we come to it I guess. Dugimodo, is there an option in Classic Shell to install the two start buttons that you mentioned? Cheers, LL

2016-05-04 22:52:00 | Hi WT, yes I do appreciate your comments about changing to Windows 10, but my sister is almost 80 and just can't deal with any changes much she said. So it would be much easier for her to cope if things were a little more familiar. Hopefully I will be able to set this up that way for her. Cheers, LL No Worries at all. :) just pointing it out, because W10 is more like W7 than what 8.1 is, even with some other third party menu (classic Shell). If you were to put classic Shell into W10, with the exception of the icons looking slightly different and the icons in W8.1 are different to W7 as well, a average user would be hard Pressed to know the difference. That's how I set it up for customers, shortcuts on the desktop or task bar as they had them before and away they go. Most average users never go anywhere near the actual settings. I know there's a lot of hate for the modern tile based menu's, but if you take the time to customise it and set it up with just the programs you use it can be very convenient. I group all my games together, all my utilities, and all my productivity apps. So I have 3 small groups of tiles.:thumbs: Thats the secret Set it up for programs you may use regularly, and remove all the ones you don't want. They will still be there should you wish to put them back at a later date. The W10 I have in the lounge is completely different to the workshop with whats available and the Media center is different again. Going from memory none of them have the original tiles that come as default.

2016-05-04 23:17:00 | Dugimodo, is there an option in Classic Shell to install the two start buttons that you mentioned?Cheers, LL It's been a while but I'm pretty sure there is, I know that's how it ended up for me. Initially there was no start button in windows 8 and classic shell added one. It's free to download and try and a fairly small download so why not just have a play. You can easily uninstall if you don't like it.
