| 1415858 | 2016-02-10 08:18:00 | Hi Team...... We have three Navman products: an MY50 with NZ and Oz maps, an MY60, and an MY90XLT that Mrs T won in a competition but which had to be replaced a couple of times because it bricked itself, (the latter two are both NZ only). I have updated maps a few times, but over the last 12-18 months I haven't been able to update at all because as soon as I start the process, my computer hangs. I then tried on a different computer with the same result. I wanted to update the NZ and Oz maps, but because of the previous lock-outs I was quite happy to have Navman's Service agent 'Service Plus' do the job. So, I called in to Service Plus only to be told that my three GPS units are no longer supported, that they would need software upgrades before they could load new maps, and that there was a serious risk that the update/loading would brick the units. Personally I can't see why updating mapping software should invalidate the 'operating system' but that was the story told! Am I getting straight information from Service Plus, or is this counter-person making it up as she goes along? I'd appreciate some opinions before I go knocking on NavMan's door, which, by the way, used to be a couple of minutes from my front door, but the inconsiderate so & so's moved on! Cheers Billy 8-{) :waughh: |

| 1415859 | 2016-02-10 08:42:00 | Sounds about right. I was updating an elderly friends navman for a few years up to 2 years ago when the updates became unavailable. Try to explain to him his free updates for life that came with it are now over. His must be at least eight years old now. My opinion of standalone GPS units are now redundant unless you have a specialised purpose | plod (107) | ||

Sounds about right. Built in obsolescence. Husband needed a new battery in his old one a while ago. Navman told him he couldn't cause it was too old and it's not user repairable anyway and he should buy a new Navman.. He took it apart himself and I bought a suitable battery online from overseas and DIY. |

| 1415862 | 2016-02-10 19:03:00 | I suspect profits in the GPS market have dropped right off since smartphones came along. You can Buy a cheap smartphone for the same price or less with about the same screen size and load one of the free offline navigation apps and get all the same functionality. Navman probably needs to squeeze you for every last cent to stay in business. Don't they advertise those as having free updates for life? and if so aren't they legally obligated to make it work? That's how I'd interpret it. |

That is just the usual sales bs they mean their planned life for the device not the expected life of the purchaser. For casual use a smartphone does the job perfectly well for me however the data costs would rapidly grow if you used it a lot. |

| 1415864 | 2016-02-10 21:19:00 | I did mention offline apps, NavMii for example is offline only and uses no data. "Here" is online by default but gives you the option of downloading the maps for offline use, and google maps let you download areas. So all 3 let you navigate with no data usage if that's a concern for you. I find the data usage is too minimal to worry about for me personally. | dugimodo (138) | ||

Yep, pretty clear cut & unambiguous isnt it. If they market something as for life, they MUST honor that claim. Of course they will try & weasel out of it, and most will just give up & accept that theres no more updates. Its just not worth the effort to fight for something promised that is no longer available . I think the market for these is pretty much stuffed, they are either built into the car or people just use their ph. I actually like a car GPS, my GPS however really doesnt like the heat of the summer sun & the heat coming off the dash . Im surprised it still works given how hot it can get. |

| 1415866 | 2016-02-11 00:11:00 | Yes, Navman map updates are a nonsense. I have managed to update a couple of times but only by using NavDesk 7.5 on an XP computer. The internet is full of complaints of NavDesk not working with later OSs. Ive also taken the matter up with their help line a couple of times and found them to be no help at all, in fact totally useless. However, a mate purchased a TomTom with Aus and NZ maps on it but wanted to add Europe and ran into trouble also. Turned out there wasnt enough storage for the three Maps so Aus & NZ had to go. Real handy. |

My brother directed me off his ph gps when I was there driving round. I had no idea where I was. Later I went on my own and printed off a google map first, this then allowed me to figure out main roads from their house - which gave me a much clearer in head viw of where I was in relation to it etc. However, they have their uses. Speaking of phones, my brothers ph came with it. Son has a Vodafone android based ph. It has google but not an actual talk to you GPS. Where does on download them? And are they expensive? |
