1415134 2016-01-28 19:13:00 The article linked above ( pctek's post) -- all those options can be turned off when installing or upgrading. Its just most people use the default settings because they either dont know how to customize the setup or simply dont know you can.

As for the part
The first issue is that Windows 10 automatically assigns an advertising ID to each user on a device tied to the email address that's on file. Using that ID, the company can tailor ads for web-browsing and using certain applications. What email address ?

When ever setting up a new PC or upgrading just use a local account, NO EMAIL required. Got several W10's in the workshop, don't have any email attached to them, in fact two actually just boot directly to windows, no passwords, and the others that do have logins / Passwords are connecting to my own servers.

Ewww better watch out, I might be spying on myself :p

1415135 2016-01-29 01:34:00 OK - after listening to all your comments, I have gone ahead and updated my laptop to Windows 10 (it being the least complicated and less important to my on-going lifestyle!). I have done that slowly and carefully (ie not the Express option), and I am happy to report that so far all has gone well. I can access my bank accounts, can read my emails, can operate my programmes associated with presentations to the camera club... What more would I want? And I have a nice new pic for the camera club members to look at (the Windows 10 window :) ).

So - so far I am happy. I will play with this for a while before I move on to the desktop.

As always - thanks for your help and comments. It is appreciated.

1415136 2016-01-29 01:42:00 Ah - a snag! I can't connect with my desktop from my lappy (useful for transferring files). I will have to think about this one for a while - it is a while since I set it up, and I think I might not have used the usual most common wireless networking. :( R.M. (561)
1415137 2016-01-29 01:50:00 Aha - all sorted. :) R.M. (561)
1415138 2016-01-29 06:20:00 Aha - all sorted. :)

Great stuff taking time out to think is a thing most people have forgotten how to do
