Paterson says that's okay if you really can't face your GP but a meeting to discuss your reasons would be an opportunity to resolve the problem and prevent a similar situation arising for other patients."
That would be ok if it was a matter of personality or similar .In my case it is I have no confidence in him as a doc, I put it, he is the kind of doc where something is clearly falling off he would treat adequately, what I want is a doc that seas you as a whole body not just a part.

Yep.
So you choose another - best to get other peoples comments first, eve if they think their doc is marvellous.
For instance someone I knew recommended a doc - when I asked about him, it seems he was a pill doc, handed out all sorts of ****.
Not my thing so no thanks.

It amazes me people put up with docs, you want a reputable electrician, builder, mechanic etc - but the one in charge of your body is acceptable by picking the nearest, or cheapest? Really?

I like ones that listen. Check thoroughly. Pass you on to specialists when out of their depth. And don't force you into things you might not want.

Alas it's only when you have tried a new that their worth( or otherwise) becomes apparent.

1415611 2016-02-08 02:21:00 This is all very interesting and relevant for me. The sole-operator GP I had had for about 30 years has retired (without asking my permission I might add) and sold the practice. As I actually now live quite a long way from the rooms I decided to change to somewhere closer to home. I'm about to enrol with a group practice that is 10 minutes away. I'm not sure what the process is for being "allocated" to a particular GP there, but it won't surprise me if I end up shuffling around a bit before I settle down. Tony (4941)
1415612 2016-02-08 04:05:00 I don't know how your group works Cic, but where we were before, almost all of the doctors in the practice worked certain days of the week. I liked the first doctor I saw, but not the second; the next time I made an appointment I simply made it for a day when I knew that the second doctor wasn't on deck. I then made sure that I always made appointments sufficiently far ahead to always be able to get an appointment with the doctor I preferred.

Probably cowardly of me I know, but my preference was simply based on personality rather than an objective knowledge of chummy's competence, so it was easier to avoid facing up to the doctor and saying "I won't be seeing you again because your personality sucks"...

BTW, where I am now, the charge is $17, whereas the practice in our previous location charged $34. How can there be such a discrepancy?

The system puts areas into deciles, that is your ability to pay ,Otaki $17,Waikanae $50,
Paraparam $34, Kaitaia $0.

My doc isn't a bad chap, just that he seems to see me as someone who like a ton of aspirin for a headache, no interest in cause.

1415614 2016-02-08 08:12:00 Hmm, can't understand how Taupo would end up in a lower decile than Hurunui. But still, I guess that must be the reason.

Doctors that focus on symptoms rather than causes seem to be more common these days. Maybe they just see our symptoms as being the consequence of one underlying cause - aging - and they can't treat that...

A pill doc....an awful lot of them are like that

Our practice charges $41 for me and $39 for husband.
Previous one was $17.

Practices set their own fees. Previous was smaller and an old building.
New one is big, new and flash, has heaps of docs and several nurses. No doubt they have to pay for the flash new building too....

I still think choosing a doctor based on price is a bad idea. I like mine so put up with the cost.
Seeing her + nurse - $61.50. Plus $3 for a prescription. Rather expensive....

The fact is, if you go to live in Kaitaia you won't pay a penny to see a doc, that suggests to me, it the area and not a lot of kindly doctors practicing in old buildings.
