608087 2007-11-03 17:59:00 Sometimes when I close a programme the icons on the desktop all change to those ones with a turned down corner and then return to normal in one’ & two’s.

Not life threatening, but I’d like to fix it if I can. :D

608088 2007-11-03 21:13:00 You will see this when the desktop is being re-rendered and there's usually not sufficient RAM or the RAM is very busy doing other things like handling commands of malware and trojans and such.

Try a system snapshot here (system, RAM, hardware..etc, and a HJT scan results.

That'll help a lot.

608089 2007-11-03 23:29:00 Pretty much what I thought Joe.

I added another 256 of RAM but that didn’t help.

The computer’s a Compaq Presario 2500 Notebook

Running XP Service Pack 2

2.6 Celron CPU

512 RAM

Have run Adaware – Ccleaner – Trojan Remover – AVG and found nothing of any significance.

The damn thing has been like it from new which is why I added more RAM.

I figured it was trying to tell me something. :D

I’ll do a HJT scan just in case.

Oh, I’ve got the Pagefile set to 1 gig. As I recall I did that in case the damn thing was trying to automatically adjust and that was holding things up.

Not the end of the world, just of nuisance value.

608090 2007-11-04 02:05:00 Add more RAM...In my opinion, I like to see 1 gig minimum for XP...but that's for good graphics. SurferJoe46 (51)
608091 2007-11-04 02:18:00 These sort of problems with desktop icons can come about through too small a size for the icon cache, especially if you have lots of icons.

It would be worthwhile increasing it:

Google gives lots of sites telling you how in addition to the above.

It was also a problem with Windows 98.

That's good reading, Terry.......thanks for that info...

608093 2007-11-04 03:09:00 Welll...I guess if you are hurting for RAM in the first place, the above repair to the registry won't help...as you'll just set aside more RAM for the icon files and take some more away from XP..which at 512 is on the ragged edge for RAM anyway...but it's a good try if you like....

I noticed that my setting was "1000" anyway...and that's the primary value to be set in the repair....so maybe it's a good place to start too.

Like I said though..take some RAM for icons and the rest of XP is gonna suffer a little.

Ahhhhhh, yes, 70 Icons Terry.

Right, I'm on to it.

I've run XP on 128 RAM Joe and not experienced this problem.

Me thinks my shortcutting everything might just be the problem. :D

608095 2007-11-04 04:16:00 You obviously don't have an attractive desktop wallpaper picture that you like to see properly, B.M.?

70 icons cover a lot of screen...

I dumped all of mine except the most-used 9.
They all fit in one row down the left side, leaving space for the pretties.

608096 2007-11-04 06:59:00 Well my Registry has a nice new string value entry called MaxCacheIcons which is set to 4096 so we’ll see if that helps .

I never previously had such an entry of any value so we’ll see if there is only a pile of ash on my desk in the morning . :D

No Laura not interested in pretty pictures, just lots of little ones . ;)

Shortcut everything, that’s me .
