607687 2007-11-02 08:15:00 I just got a new case and the front audio connectors had a number of choices.
There was a solid connecter for HD audio, a solid connecter fo AC97 and the loose ones for Azalia.

My motherbaord is an ASUS M2N-E SLI and in the BIOS there is one choice:

USB Audio enabled or disabled.

I plugged in HD Audio for front panel and later I noticed sound was almost non-existent. In fact I thought it wasn't working at all as it was so faint even with the speakers cranked up full.

Tested another set of speakers, same result.

Then I plugged the speakers into the front audio jack. LOUD!!!!!

So I disconnected HD audio off the motherboard and used the AC97 connecter instead.

Now sound is back to normal from both rear and front jack.

But why? I can't find an aexplanation for that.

607688 2007-11-02 09:30:00 Don't know if this is of any help, but I had something similar using AC, rear speakers fine, front so low, even at full volume you almost had to have your ear up to them to hear any thing.

The fix was open the HD audio settings (orange speaker) Audio Tab, there was a small circle with a spanner in it, opened that and the check box that says Disable front panel (words to that effect) was unticked, ticked it, played a windows shutdown sound - damn near blew the speakers it was so loud, rear speakers the same.

Cant check those exact settings as I'm on the Better halfs PC and only going from memory.

Edited: ok remembered the Pic is on my server Here - setting (www.imagef1.net.nz)

607689 2007-11-02 11:31:00 Common problem - disable the jack detection as wainuitech said, and all should be sweet. I generally prefer to use AC97, don't really have a reason though!!!  wratterus (105)

If the mainboard supports HD Audio Front panel connectors there should be an option in the BIOS like 'Front Audio' or similar and you can set it to HDAudio or AC97.
Sometimes it will be 'HD Front Audio' with the option to Enable or Disable.
Unless your mainboard has two seperate connectors for the front audio connectors...

607691 2007-11-02 17:25:00 It wasn't a mute setting in the software - I checked all that first.

The BIOS doesn't have anything about front audio at all.

And front audio worked just fine with the HD audio connectoer attached to it - it then stuffed rear.

I asked my electronics friend and he said its probably to do with the way the case manufacturer wired these connecters - plug in the one marked HD and it auto mutes rear.

Weird.

Anyway both rear and front are now happy using the ac97 connecter so I'm at last off to play the Cysis demo.
With sound.
