608973 2007-11-07 01:05:00 Hi everyone,
I would like to network my laptop and my PC so that my husband and I can both use the internet at the same time. We have a D Link ADSL modem. Is this possible and more importantly is it difficult for a doityourselfer? Thanks for your help

608974 2007-11-07 01:14:00 Is this modem a router as well??

Has it got more than 1 ethernet port??

If it does, you need an ethernet cable, plug it into the back and connect the other end into the networked PC.

Its easy enough depending on what type of adsl Modem you have .

The easiest way is to have a modem/router combined, then its simply plugging the two PC's into the router and setting the Internet to obtain the IP address . If its wireless you want for the laptop, then you need a wireless Access point on the modem / router . This picture Here gives you an Idea ( . dlink . com/products/resource . asp?pid=67&rid=322&sec=0" target="_blank">www . dlink . com)

Before this goes any further, you say you have a D-Link ADSL modem, ?

What Model is it please . It will be written on it some place, maybe the back /underside .

Think of them as one and the same, saves a lot of bother getting to bottom of the question.

Router-modem.

608981 2007-11-07 21:58:00 Looks like this modem uses USB (how its connected to the main computer)?

And an ethernet port. Just buy some Ethernet cable (search.dse.co.nz 676&site=&w=ethernet+cable&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=Go)

And plug one end into the back of the modem.

And the other end into the network card connection, on the other PC.

But if you want to network MORE than 2 computers, you'll have to buy a modem/router, or something with more ethernet ports on it.

A router has up to 254 IP addresses, ( actually 255 but the first is reserved for the routers gateway) This means technically you can add upto 254 computers from the one router by adding in whats called switches ( but thats starting to get technical now  ).

If you go back to the post I put the pictures in , you will see the bottom one has an additional "box" attached to it, thats the router. What happens is your internet connection comes into the modem, then the router splits off to allow different addresses.

What Ciceo means by Modem- router is the modem and router are combined into one unit.

But if you want to network MORE than 2 computers, you'll have to buy a modem/router, or something with more ethernet ports on it.

From past experance I have found If you have the 302 then its either ethernet or USB - not both some of them can give real big problems.
