608888 2007-11-06 17:30:00 Have been asked to set up a home network that will include suggesting ISP and broadband plan.
Some of the computers on this home network will be wireless so at the moment (without looking into Ascent or other online retailers at this stage); I am wondering which ISP's still offer [heavily discounted] wireless routers as part of their signup.

I may yet look at buying the router seperately but if I can get it thrown in with the connection it should work out cheaper (the main client is my sister-in-law who is quite a good sort)

608889 2007-11-06 18:04:00 Most ISP's are still offering discount routers on signup you just need to look around and decide who offers the best deal currently Ihug are offering a years free broadband but don't know the details of the offer. gary67 (56)

608892 2007-11-07 08:34:00 I think that being swayed as to which ISP to use based on free hardware giveaways is not a good idea! Instead look at which ISP deal is best for you - the cost of hardware can easily fade into insignificance over a couple of years of use! johnd (85)

Also, at the end of the day, its the client who has the final say; I am just going to present prices, advice, with a very minimally slight bit of bias ("don't go near Slingshot" :D)

So yes, I will be going there with more than one option obviously

608894 2007-11-08 06:15:00 Regardless of which ISP you chose, I wouldn't use their e-mail (in case they change ISPs in the future)

Sign them up at gmail.com, use IMAP access and Thunderbird.

608895 2007-11-08 08:49:00 Consumer Mag (www.consumer.org.nz) have a really good chart to select Broadband. Unfortunately, if you're not a member it costs $15 to read it. Or you can try your local library for the hard copy for free.

Well worth it though, very detailed and could save megabucks in the future.

608897 2007-11-08 19:32:00 The advantages of the on-line one are:

- it is regularly updated
- it shows all plans from all providers (haven't counted them but if there are 10 providers with 10 plans then that is 100 plans to look at!)
- you can filter them
- you can tick some to compare them

The library copy of the mag wouldn't be as detailed but could be a good start for your own research. Depends on how much time you want to devote to it versus cost.

There is also a, separate, article on ISPs based on a member survey.
