2007-11-06 09:18:00 | Hey! I do not like my current network setup at home and am wanting to change . This is what it looks like now: INTERNET (Orcon) -- Dynalink RTA1320 -- Linksys WRT54G -- The LAN The rta1320 is just a stupid router/modem with one port that was sent to us by Orcon . So the WRT54G, even though its actually a router, is acting only as an access point and since it doesn't have a built in modem I cannot use it as everything and eliminate the rta1320! Now, there is constant problems with rta1320 and I am sick of manually restarting it (the firmware updates didn't help) . Trying to get it to work only as a modem and not a router never worked out :S So what I want to do is buy a ALL IN ONE, Wireless Router/Modem . What one do you recommend? Thank you Gregor

2007-11-06 23:07:00 | If you would like to future proof yourself a bit with a wireless router that supports the faster, longer range wireless 802.11N standard(still in draft form) check out this review (arstechnica.com)on Ars Technica. This review has been updated to include the Apple Airport Extreme (www.dse.co.nz). Oops, Ignore the Apple router, it doesn't include a dsl modem. Some of the new router models include USB print and/or file server functionality. Others offer web/audio/video serving features... HTH

2007-11-06 23:25:00 | Would it not be simpler to simply disable the routing functions on the modem and let the all powerful WRT54g handle the routing? You will struggle to find a superior router for anywhere near the price of the WRT54g. In my old flat we were using the same Dynalink modem hooked up to our Smoothwall box and it worked fine, since Smoothwall is essentially the same as a WRT54G it should work fine. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | |
2007-11-07 05:35:00 | yes it probably would be easier to somehow make the stupid rta1320 function only as a modem. but i've got no idea how. i read how someone did it on this site, but when i tried it i couldn't find the right options. any help appreciated :) yeah i was thinking about wireless N but since its still in draft-form i rather not bother with that yet.

Draft form doesn't really mean anything because the n-standard has been accepted and thus any draft-n devices are that only in name now, not in features or acceptance. |

2007-11-07 09:54:00 | i have an smc barricade g wireless router servicing 2 laptops via wireless and a dlink media player and 1 wired pc off a stinky dlink dsl 502t modem. the 2 laptops can watch avi mpeg files shared from the pc at the same time pretty much (not often all 3 but now and again 2 at the same) no problems, good range. the dlink media player can play the files from the pc sweet, only now and again the dlink will pause for a second or 2, but thats usually due to someone on the pc opening photoshop. no problems with net access on the laptops and pc. i love wireless! :) | Term_X (560) | |
2007-11-07 09:59:00 | i bought the combined wireless dlink modem/router and i didnt like it. the network didnt run smoothly so went back to the original dsl 502t modem and a mate gave me his smc wireless router. the network seemed to go much better with a separate modem and router. my 2 cents worth!
