608604 2007-11-05 05:55:00 just brought a new lappey it has every thing i needed apart form it only
came with 1gig ram
so i want to put 2 2gig chip in an was looking on price spy an
there seem's to be a big price differance between brands
Q: is there any differance between a say a $60 strip of ram an
a $190 strip of ram
newbee (10498)
608605 2007-11-05 06:00:00 Yep - its $130.00:D

Ok seriously, yes there is a difference, laptops can be fussy about what sort of RAM they have, Some of them well work fine with what ever you put in, others simply wont go, or you all have all of stability problems.

608606 2007-11-05 06:08:00 Look at the specs for your lappy and see what's already in it. gary67 (56)
608607 2007-11-05 07:21:00 as above my compac lappey has 1 gig - or two 512 gig to be specific
it goes good as it is but i would like to future prof it

608608 2007-11-05 07:56:00 No, I think what Gary means is that you should check the specs very carefully before buying any RAM.

Obviously you pay more for some good brands, high density and low density can affect prices and of course the speed. In a laptop though, to future proof it, if you get some cheap, generic brands that, as long as they match the specs of your current RAM and your machine is happy to work with it, you'll be fine.

Go into a shop if your not certain just to have a look and get some advice and buy online then if you want.

608609 2007-11-05 08:02:00 Yes, you've given the numbers, newbee..

But according to what I've seen on here, there are different kinds of Ram. Brand names may also count. And so do slots.

So do you know what kind/brand of RAM you have?
And are there spare slots?

(I know little. I'm just asking what an expert probably will later - to save time)

608611 2007-11-05 08:47:00 post your laptop make & model & we can find out what it needs for you. Greven (91)
608612 2007-11-05 10:35:00 I personally would go for the cheapest "lifetime warranty" ram....

Cause even if it's dirt cheap, so what if it spoils? Just go get a replacement!
