608290 2007-11-04 17:11:00 Hi I have a problem with my partition. I have always used Partition Magic to change partitions etc but when I run it Vista didn't seem to like it much. PM noticed a couple of problems and fixed them and then decided it couldn't run on Vista. Now I have lost that backup partition. It is reported as freespace in Gparted but I downloaded the demo of PTDD Partition Table Doctor 3.5 and it says Partition 1 and Partition 2 on Harddisk 1 overlap. It won't fix it without destorying the data. The backup partition is Fat32.
Does anyone know of a program to fix this. I don't think System Restore will do it or a rebuild of the FAT.
Thanks,
asdex

608291 2007-11-04 21:15:00 Did you install Partition Magic within Windows? - or run it off the floppy dics?

I don't think PM is compatible with Vista (however if you run off the floppies is should work). Did you do a set of rescue discs - if so use them.

If not before you write or do anything with the drive, Image your drive (ghost or acronics true image).

Then and get hold of Getdataback from www.runtime.org and try recovery. With it's BertPE plugins it can be run off a bootable CD. It may be able to recovery your partitions / data.

Alternative to Getdataback: r-studio from: http://www.r-studio.com/ - but move drive to another PC and make it a slave before running r-studio.

608292 2007-11-04 22:26:00 There have been changes to NTFS from XP to Vista (see www.msblog.org) - so booting from floppies with Partition Magic for XP may??? not work - be careful! johnd (85)
608293 2007-11-05 03:52:00 To save the Data you can always try using a Live Linux CD something Like Knoppix Live CD (www.knopper.net), boot from the CD and make sure you have a removable drive or another HD attached as a slave then see if you can read the damaged partition, and copy your data to another location. Then using the software mentioned in your post, recreate the Partition. wainuitech (129)
608294 2007-11-05 22:33:00 Thanks very much for your advise. I will try those programs and also see if Linux can access the partition. I'm also downloading some data recovery software to try if I can't restore the partition (PC INSPECTOR File Recovery)
